Response Guidelines HJ
Read the initial posts of the other learners and respond to at least two. In each
response, explain why you decided to respond to this particular post. Provide feedback
on the learner’s sampling and recruiting strategy. Does it make sense? What questions
do you have about it? What suggestions do you have for overcoming obstacles in the
approach?
Your response must be a minimum of 200 words in length. Include at least two APAformatted citation (in-text, as well as the full reference). The citation may be from
course textbooks, assigned readings, or an outside source.
Sampling A
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome affects the quality of life of many individuals. The
use of CPAP therapy is considered a best-practice therapeutic approach in treating this
condition, but it has potential adverse effects. It is not clear what effect the therapy
itself has on cardiac function and the quality of life of ethnic groups at higher risk for
heart disease. You need to perform an inexpensive and relatively quick study about
this issue in a South Asian immigrant community in your state.
The sampling approach for this scenario is a purposive sampling, as this will
be a qualitative non-probability approach, as this will allow a theoretical sampling
with an aim not so much to generalize, but to uncover the truths about the
application of the CPAP in treating this phenomenon. This sampling approach is
convenient as all the subjects are conveniently located in one community of the
state, and one ethnic background. Subjects can be selected on a first come first
served basis or generally those who happen to be first. This type of sampling is
used as necessary as in this case, in deriving a sample from this population,
which seem to be a hidden population, and the population cannot be identified in
advance, as no complete or up-to-date list may not be available. Purposive
sampling in qualitative studies is used in this population of interest to ensure that
the research samples of the data rich sources generate an in-depth conceptual
and theoretical understanding (Lacey, Procter & Allan, 2013).
Pros and Cons
The pros of the non-probability sample of a purposive sampling are; it is
widely used in nursing research. It can also be used in quantitative research for
preliminary or exploratory studies where random sampling may be costly, where
there is no available appropriate sampling frame or when this is the only means
of getting the information that is required. When a comprehensive list of the study
population is not possible, researchers use a non-probability sampling scheme
(Lacey, Procter & Allan, 2013).
The cons of this sampling allow for every element of the sample not to
have an equal inclusion, and raises potential bias in any particular study (Omery,
A.K., n.d).
Scholarly Article
This article reports on a study done on substance abusers’ anger
behaviour, and sensory processing patterns. The purpose of the study was
describing adult substance abusers’ anger behaviour, their sensory processing
patterns, and their need for occupational therapists in providing opportunities for
these abusers to experience, and practice effective ways in coping with their
anger. A quantitative, cross-sectional study method was conducted to describe
adult substance abusers’ anger behaviour in relation to their sensory processing
patterns. The population and sampling method, employed a non-probability,
purposive, convenient sampling, consisting of a sample of 84 in-patient
participants at one substance abuse hospital, and 30 at another similar hospital.
The participants were conveniently located in one place, and the population was
one of interest in ensuring that the research samples rich data on substance
abusers’ anger, were generated in-depthly to uncover the truths about the
phenomenon, and advance theoretical understanding. The results noted that
anger behaviour in the majority of participants with low registration patterns,
more than the norm, were related to a style, which directly expresses anger. It
was concluded that the occupational therapist should consider evaluating, and if
necessary address the sensory processing of their adult patients, who
experience problematic anger, and abuse difficulties (Stols, Heerden, Jaarsveld
& Nel. 2013).
