Vital Signs
What does Richard D’Aquila mean when he states, leaders need to “have a method
of monitoring vital signs and deciding where to channel problem solving efforts.”?
What are ‘vital signs’ and how should leaders assess the quality if evidence used to
make evidence-based decisions?
Discussion Response
Incorporating an evidence-based analysis in the decision-making process has proven to
be beneficial in medical centers, to include Yale-New Haven Hospital. Every organization
is different, but there are certain areas (or vital signs) that they must focus their
decision-making efforts. Much like the human body, these areas (vital signs) are key to
the successful functioning of the organization. When we have address the patient’s
drop-in blood pressure, we may focus on his oxygen saturation that is less than 95%.
Sometimes, however, it is imperative that we focus on both at the same time as much of
our body works interdependently.
Managers have to think the same way. It is important for everyone on the
leadership team (and arguably the entire organization) to understand what those vital
signs are for the organization. Richard D’Aquila discusses the major dimensions of
organizational performance: strategic planning, resource allocation, quality and safety
surveillance, performance management, and operational dashboard systems (year).
Having a thorough understanding of each of these lines of effort and making
adjustments when an area is struggling will keep the organization strong, since many of
these rely on the other.
There are many ways to assess the quality of evidence used. The readings discuss
the use SWOT (strengths/weaknesses/opportunities/threats) and using committees to
evaluate the evidence (year). Doing this ensures that the evidence is current, applicable,
relevant, and accurate. Management will have to decide if the evidence has enough
detail to make certain conclusions as it relates to both the study and also their
organization.
