There are many interesting and controversial trends, projects, ideas and products these days that
impact the health of Americans. Four topics are of particular concern or interest these days – addiction,
healthcare (including the high cost of prescription drugs), gene splicing and how our microbiome affects
our health. Many of the options for your research paper are about one of those.
Part 1
Choose a topic from the list and send it to me. The sooner you send it to me, the better your chances of
getting the one you want. Only 1 person per section for each article. Be sure to put your name, section
and the words Research Paper on the subject line and give me both the number of your topic and the
topic description. 5 points off if I have to look up either for you.
Part 2
Find one other article on the same topic. If your topic is controversial, find an article from the other
perspective . Your second article must be from a reputable news source, not Wikipedia or the National
Enquirer or a blog. The news sources listed below are acceptable. If you would like to use an article
from someplace else, check with me first.

If you cannot find a good article on the topic, you should change your topic.
If you find a crummy article and someone in another section has found a good one, they will
obviously get a higher grade. Spend some time looking for an article that looks at your topic in
depth, don’t just grab the shortest article you can find, or the first article that comes up on a
search engine.
Articles must be recent (2010 or after) and from a reliable source, such as a peer-reviewed journal, a
website ending in .gov, .org or .edu., a highly-regarded newspaper such as the New York Times, The Wall
Street Journal, the Washington Post, The Guardian or the Los Angeles Times, a highly-regarded
magazine such as National Geographic, The Atlantic, Nature, Science, Consumer Reports or The
Economist, or a newsletter from an organization with no goal except health literacy such as The Center
for Science in the Public Interest, the CDC, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland clinic, Hopkins/ Berkeley /
Harvard/University of Maryland Schools of Public Health, the COCHRANE REVIEW (try for one article
from there first, as it is the gold standard).
Librarians in Cook Library will help you find reliable sources. The library has access to a number of
health-rated search engines. There is a Chat function on the library homepage in case you can’t get
there in person.
Using the following table, summarize both my article and yours, and then compare them and analyze
their content.
Although you may have only read 2 articles on this topic, include your own perspective on this topic at
this point, and why you feel the way you do. What action do you feel should be taken, by what agency
and with what funding source?

(from my list).

What are the major points of the second article (that you
found. This cannot be another article on my list. If your topic
is controversial, find an article from the other perspective)

with your first? They should cover the same aspects of the
topic – or at least have some overlap.
