This assignment has three parts. In part I, you will develop survey questions to be administered
to a group of your peers (you will not actually have to administer the survey). Part II will ask
you to arrange the questions using the strategies we discussed in lecture. Finally, in part III, you
will contribute several questions to our “worst question” competition.
PART I
Imagine you are sitting on your couch streaming Breaking Bad (or a show of your choosing. But
come on, be honest, Breaking Bad is pretty darn good) on Netflix when the phone rings. On the
other end of the line is the marketing director for a major US retailer. The marketing director
explains she is contacting you to help develop a survey for her company. Of course, your first
question is, “why are you contacting me?” She quickly explains that you completed Dr.
Boutwell’s Research Methods course, meaning you are one of the best-trained research
methodologists in the country! You say, “Well, I can’t dispute that. So, what’s the survey
topic?” From there, the marketing director explains her company would like to learn more about
the Millennial Generation’s shopping habits and their attitudes toward certain brands. Roughly
speaking, the Millennial Generation is defined as anyone born between the 1980s and the early
2000s. Before hanging up, the marketing director agrees to let you insert a few questions of your
choosing so that you may use data from the survey in your own research.
Listed below are six topics to be included in the survey. Develop two (2) questions for each
topic and list them on the following pages. Keep the wording guidelines (see your notes and
chapter 8 in the book) in mind when drafting the survey questions:

Drawing on our discussion of the survey question ordering guidelines, write a brief statement
discussing how you would order the questions developed in part I. You do not need to rewrite
the questions here. Instead, I simply want to know how you would arrange the survey in order to
encourage truthful responses on part of the respondent. Be sure to discuss issues such as social
desirability, rapport, and measurement error.

PART III
The final portion of this assignment will have you submit three (3) questions to our “worst
question” competition. Imagine you are developing questions to be included on a political
campaign questionnaire. With this in mind, create questions that violate the guidelines for
writing survey questions discussed in lecture and in the textbook (chapter 8). Try to phrase the
questions not only so that they result in misleading answers that are favorable to the political
campaign, but also so that they would appear to many people to be perfectly reasonable
questions. Be sure to note the guideline that has been violated and how the mistake could result
in measurement error in the survey.
