In Morton Feldman piece, 3 Voices, I have noticed it starts off with a very steady tone
that doesn’t go higher or lower than the average, it stays balanced throughout the piece most of
the time. It is a very interesting track to listen to, personally I haven’t heard anything like this
before, I can relate it to Opera, but it just seems like a different style, just like fruits you can tell
that both apples and oranges are fruits, but there is so many differences between them.
I heard a higher pitch voice with a different happier melody on 7:37, it was the same
three voices, but every couple of seconds one of the voices will raise above the other too, while
the other two would act as background voices, and in general it started to get a little faster in
temp then suddenly a little slower. One of the characteristics I really loved about the piece was
how the voices combined sound a lot more like a soft flute which I thought was very cool and
pretty creative, it must have been hard for Feldman to create such a beautiful complex work.
In 11:15 the melody of the piece got darker it felt as if a new episode was starting. It
continued with the same rhythm from the beginning, but it gave a cold dark vibe to the track. On
15:05 I felt that the voices started singing slower and in a different tone that the one before, it
was more calm, he rhythm was more of weak beat with high density, even though the voices
were structured in a way that is unusual, the combination felt very on beat and regular.
On 20:04 the words were starting to become more recognizable, also one voice was more
dominant than the others while the other two kept singing in the back and they would go silent
for couple of seconds while that single dominant voice takes over the piece, it was very harmonic
and complex, but it felt as if it has a tonal structure to the piece then silence on 21:19, then after
4 seconds they start singing again. I noticed the tone started to change after one of the voices was
making very small tiny words interfering with the piece as the other two voices were raising
higher and higher.
Around min 31:00 the three major voices started singing in a very low voice as if they are
whispering to each other, it kind of reminded me of the three witches from Macbeth. It would go
very loud gradually with time to the point where it gets fast and short with high pitches, it
sounded like sad souls crying or maybe like a group of birds flying in a very organized way over
the sea. Then all of the sudden the same theme of the opening repeated itself all over again in a
bit slower tone, but what is different it was longer and then the temp changed to an upbeat fast
one which unlike the opening that did not have that. On 37:03 the voices started singing in a
slower temp back again to the rhythm from the middle part of the track, it felt like a chorus
repeating itself it wasn’t different in melody than before, but what distinguish this part than the
rest you can hear one of the voices whispering the word “Falls” very clearly in between the other
voices.
Another part I feel needs to be pointed out is on minute 48:40 I believe the ending started
because the theme of the track was getting slower and more distant, and one of the voices had a
very clear melody over the rest until it all combined together repeating a rhythm with breaks in
between till it ended. Overall, I think this piece as a whole is very interesting and creative, the
melody was complex yet very light to the ears. It had small intervals especially in the fast tempo
parts, it is not something you can sing or just catch in mind, it feels more of at the moment thing,
and after you are done listening to it you can’t find anything that is similar to how it sounds. The
dynamic was so consistent and soft, but it did get intense and powerful when the voices went
loud in some parts. In general it is a think, dense, rough piece in my opinion, but it gives a warm
clean vibe to the listener.
