What does it mean to read a text closely and analyze it? Why do we do close reading in literary study?

skills employed in literary close reading lend themselves to other kinds of investigation and analysis (for
works in other media, for example) but focus on language as conveying meaning.

Example: The speaker’s tone seems solemn and serious, which is later confirmed with the use of
death-related metaphors. While the theme of the inevitability of death seems most obvious, the
poem also remains somewhat obscure with its ambiguous symbolism. In fact, “Name of Poem”
requires a thorough re-read for accurate understanding.

Research several literary critics’ analyses of the poem on the library databases, including JSTOR,
Literature Criticism Online, and Literature Resource Center.
o Check “Journal Articles” as the Content Type.
o Check “Languages & Literatures” as Discipline.

Choose at least one journal article with related criticism to comment on.
