Paper #1 Assignment Sheet: Poetry Close Reading
Length: 3-4 pages (750-1,000 word count)
MLA format: Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced (include a Works Cited page)
*At least one scholarly source needed (a journal article).
*At least three quotes or paraphrases used as evidence.
Include a combination title.
For this close reading, I want to read your response to at least one critic’s analysis of a particular poem.
o Use third-person point of view only.
o Use CEW format without using “I.”
o No “I believe,” “I think,” “I feel,” “My opinion.”
What does it mean to read a text closely and analyze it? Why do we do close reading in literary study?
The answers to these questions emerge more from the doing than the talking. Briefly, close reading is a
basic tool for understanding, taking pleasure in, and communicating one’s interpretation of a text. The
skills employed in literary close reading lend themselves to other kinds of investigation and analysis (for
works in other media, for example) but focus on language as conveying meaning.
To Do List:
□ Choose any poem from the syllabus; it may or may not be one that we’ve already discussed in
class.

First, analyze it WITHOUT accessing any outside sources for assistance. Write down your
interpretation and analysis of the tone, theme, word choice, figurative language (alliteration,
symbolism, metaphor, simile, etc.) Use third-person point of view. Write 2-4 sentences.
Example: The speaker’s tone seems solemn and serious, which is later confirmed with the use of
death-related metaphors. While the theme of the inevitability of death seems most obvious, the
poem also remains somewhat obscure with its ambiguous symbolism. In fact, “Name of Poem”
requires a thorough re-read for accurate understanding.

Research several literary critics’ analyses of the poem on the library databases, including JSTOR,
Literature Criticism Online, and Literature Resource Center.
o Check “Journal Articles” as the Content Type.
o Check “Languages & Literatures” as Discipline.

Choose at least one journal article with related criticism to comment on.

What are the scholarly critic’s main points? Do you agree/disagree with those points? The goal is
to comment on the main argument of each scholarly article.

Find at least two major points of contention that you have with the article. Or find at least two
major points in the article where you agree with the critic. Or choose a combination. Each body
paragraph will comment on one of these major points.

Write a brief summary of the critic’s article (approx. 1-2 sentences):
o
Example:
In [name of writer]’s article titled “___,” he/she comments on the following idea of
______ as it relates to the poem “___.”

Write your thesis statement.
The writer falls short in his/her anlaysis and fails to mention _____.
The writer succeeds in developing a strong argument about _____ by ____.
The writer succeeds in ______ but fall shorts in ______.

Write your introduction paragraph using this format (less than 1 page in length)
o SHORT Description of the Poem
o Your Interpretation of the Poem BEFORE Accessing Outside Sources (Use Third-Person
POV)
o BRIEF Summary of Literary Critic’s Article
o Thesis Statement

Each body paragraph should follow the Claim-Evidence-Warrant format. Body “paragraphs”
may be longer than one formal paragraph. Instead, they are really body “sections.”

You should use at least three pieces of evidence (quotes or paraphrases WITH proper MLA
citations) from the literary critic’s article.

Wrap it up with a conclusion paragraph to summarize your argument. (7-12 sentences in length)
I, Too
BY
LANGSTON HUGHE S
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.
