Evaluation Assignment:
You will research and evaluate one pop culture object/artifact in relation to our modes of
analysis. Your cultural object/artifact should be appropriate for the length. A song or individual
TV episode may be too small. A genre of music or collection of work by one director would
conversely be too broad. Think about using a TV series, an album, a website, the publication of a
novel, a film, etc. For example, you could look at Beyoncé’s album B’day in relation to black
femininity.
In the paper, you need to form clear criteria/metrics of analysis to evaluate your pop cultural
artifact with an argument in relation to your investigation and analysis. For instance, consider
who is producing and consuming the object/artifact, the historical context, reviews, scholarly
work on the subject, etc.
You will need to support your judgment with sound reasons and evidence. Limit the use of
personal pronouns in order to produce a formal written piece.
Requirements:
•
2-3 pages minimum
•
1 page of evaluative standards/criteria, 1-2 pages of evaluation with those standards
•
Basic essay format with solid and clear thesis statement that is making a judgment about
the topic
•
Limited use of personal pronouns – avoid “I think” – “In my opinion” – “I believe” and
other phrases that create conversational writing

Morals and Pop Culture Society
We live in a world encompassed by mainstream culture, and I trust that without it, the
world would be much more awful off. Mainstream culture has emphatically changed our way of
life and improved it. I trust the music video for Strip Me by Natasha Bedingfield makes a decent
showing with regards to representing that all isn’t lost as long as one individual is battling for
change. In spite of the fact that I concur that popular culture can encourage the development of
bigotry and separation as West proposes, it additionally can battle them. I furthermore trust that
popular culture is so caught in people groups’ lives today that it has turned out to be fundamental
to battling the societal issues West specifies.
These are by all account not the only issue individuals; be that as it may, it can be
adjusted to fit any individual. The usual topic is that issue individuals are individuals that are
disregarded. In his exposition, West states, “popular government itself is undermined when we
don’t feel a commitment to others and don’t feel ourselves to be ‘a national among subjects.'”
(Page 123). This demonstrates keeping in mind the end goal to live in a law-based society, just
by and large implying that everybody has a say, one must show regard towards others. Issue
individuals are typically a bit of hindsight.
For instance, when passing a man in a wheelchair while strolling down the road, this, for
the most part, summons some empathetic feeling. Nonetheless, the staggering idea is generally
Morals and Pop Culture Society
2
about being appreciative that isn’t you. When constructing a building, a wheelchair incline is one
of the last things assembled, primarily because it was thought of toward the end. The
incapacitated are seen practically as peons. Understanding “what it intended to be given a role as
a component of an issue people as opposed to individuals with issues,” (West 124), and
understanding the distinction between those two explanations is the most important certainty
here.
West’s other imperative point that runs as an inseparable unit with issue individuals are
the nonmarket estimations of society. Nonmarket esteems meaning the apparently elusive
endowments you can give each other. Endowments, for example, regard, thoughtfulness to
others, or looking for somebody. “Nonmarket esteems are rare, which is one reason why it is so
difficult to activate and sort out individuals in our general public around pretty much any
reason.” (West 127). West feels that the significance of nonmarket esteems has everything except
vanished since the development of popular culture.
Asserting there is an absence of them these days, West goes ahead to portray how
consummate life was back when he was growing up. Depicting an area that appeared as though it
was taken straight off the arrangement of a Mr. Rodgers appear, West paints an excellent scene
of the cliché white picket fence home, encompassed by family, companions, instructors, and
mentors; every one of the makings for a brilliant youth (Van Leeuwen). His youth home was
helpful for raising a family with a splendid future imparted with the best possible esteems and
demonstrated generosity consistently.
Exchanging gears, West’s portrayal of the dark ‘hood’ (page 126) couldn’t be more
inverse, intimating that these ‘hoods’ were intrinsically risky places potentially because of the
absence of nonmarket esteems. It is now in the exposition, once more, where he recognizes the
Morals and Pop Culture Society
3
issues, be that as it may, his answers just appear to be to backpedal to how things were the point
at which he was growing up (Leeuwen). Times, innovation, and culture have changed. To me, he
is taking a gander at the world from the wrong edge. West is so reminiscent of his past that he
gives it a chance to dominate what an incredible world he lives in now.
When West’s essay was first published, the world was a much different place back then
than it is now. A decade can make a massive difference. Though his cynicism is not entirely
unwarranted, he fails to acknowledge the world changing around him. Though briefly touching
upon the media, West only addresses it from one side. West uses a poor example to show the
effects of social media on society. West seems to claim that rap nowadays cheapens the idea of
marketing this ‘black rage’ by these rap artists using it to make money.
However, to me, these groups are bringing more awareness to the fact that black
Americans are angry. West does not seem to realize that these songs can still have a positive
impact on the issue (Littlejohn). By only mentioning examples of pop culture that portray the
media as having an adverse effect on American citizens, he is creating a biased essay that does
not allow for people to see the other side. Pop culture can have a huge, positive impact on society
if it is used the right way.
Back in 2005 when this essay was published social media was not a huge part of peoples’
lives. It certainly did not dominate the way people live the way it does today. While some see
this as a negative, many do not see the other side of the situation. Social media is a powerful,
efficient tool that is often overlooked or cast aside as something that is not useful or meaningful.
West almost comes across as bothered that these issues are being brought up in pop culture.
This struck a chord because this seems like a complaint. That yes, these issues are always
there in society, however, they are not addressed often enough for a change to be made. With
Morals and Pop Culture Society
4
social media and pop culture, these issues are spoken about almost every day. If utilized
correctly, Twitter, Facebook, along with many other social media platforms, has the ability to
change the world by bringing awareness to these topics that are so bluntly pointed out in West’s
essay. In most extraordinary countries, regardless, American social things are not as wide as they
are in Canada, and they stand up to more private contention. All things considered, two general
examples can be viewed. In any case, various American social things tend to be predominant
with people of by and large extraordinary social requests.
Second, regardless of the reputation of American social things, distinctive countries still
make an impressive number of films, music, books, and TV shows up. American social things
are convincing in the communicated business, as well. For example, American association CNN
epitomizes the overall news organize. In the wake of starting as a connection news sort out for
U.S. watchers just, CNN now comes to more than 200 million families in more than 212
countries and locales (Burke). Regardless, TV remains a more neighborhood social casing than
movies, music, or conveyances. Almost by definition, standard culture has achieved an enormous
worldwide after unquestionably in light of the way that it is outstanding. For a few subjects of
various countries notwithstanding, the nearby expect control of their own social ventures,
especially for more energetic get-togethers of individuals, is of mind blowing concern.
It is invaluable in that it makes a shared conviction for individuals from tremendously
extraordinary foundations. Individuals from various mainland’s can talk about well-known
motion pictures, recreations, books, and different types of diversion. This makes a superior
feeling of group around the world. Nonetheless, this could likewise show the possibility to lose
recognizing attributes of neighborhood types of creation as individuals contend to end up plainly
more like popular culture symbols. It makes a bound together measure of accomplishment that
Morals and Pop Culture Society
5
presently spins around the proceeded with acquisition of material riches—a thought that can’t
possibly be honed on a worldwide scale for absence of assets.
Thusly, what popular culture moves toward becoming is to a great extent up to the
individuals who participate in it. Would one be able to expend popular culture without making
his or her joy reliant on satisfying the benchmarks it makes? The individuals who contend this is
unimaginable have really settled a counter-culture that is, all by itself, another type of popular
culture that exists as a contradiction to the notorious portrayals of standard entertainment. In
summation, while the substance that involves popular culture may have changed, its possibility
has not. It is as yet an accumulation of famous goals and thoughts that are made for a collection
of purchasers.
Counter-culture, set up as a method for getting away from this pattern, has turned into its
own particular type of popular culture which obliges an alternate segment of society. Individuals
today accuse mainstream culture for the “tainting” of the present age. Numerous Americans don’t
think about alternate factors that go into pop culture. There are in certainty many components
that go into the things, for example, teenager pregnancy, training disappointment, and brutality
of the present youth. Factors, for example, cash, home life, and environment. Not exclusively do
Americans feel mainstream culture is at fault, yet in addition feels pop culture is having its
influence too early.
Before having the capacity to examine the impacts mainstream culture has on kids, what
precisely is “adolescence?” With the progressing verbal confrontation of fetus removal many
individuals don’t concede to when a kid’s life creatures. Does a tyke’s life start the minute the
sperm and egg meet? At the second trimester in a pregnancy? During childbirth? When
Morals and Pop Culture Society
6
pondering adolescence, many consider a youthful kid experiencing the diverse stages to grow up
into a develop grown-up.
Twitter is an excellent example as to how great and how strong an influence social media
can be. Within minutes a natural disaster can become a trending topic of discussion. Links to
news articles as well as essential pictures can be shared with millions at the touch of a button.
Crucial information such as incidences of racism or other significant issues in society can be
addressed by important figureheads within American culture.
Reaching audiences well into the millions, tweets about controversial topics can be
discussed, and now many more people are aware of certain situations. I can’t even begin to count
the number of times I’ve seen a celebrity share a sad story about a person only to have a
GoFundMe account set up for them to help them back on their feet (Jenkins). West does a great
job of highlighting the adverse effects of pop culture. It is true that it can change lives, but West
only seems to focus on it improving lives for the worse, not the better.
The problem people, the lack of nonmarket values in today’s society, and other issues can
be brought to awareness by merely paying attention to pop culture. Going back to the Black
Panther Party versus current rap music, while one could listen to current rap song and feel as
though it is only “marketing black rage” (West 127), another person could look at it from another
direction and see it as a sign that black people are calling out for help. Though it is just one band
that is making this music, one person is all you need.
The key here is that it only took one person to make a difference. It decided one person to
put together a grassroots effort in an attempt to change the way society thinks. A music video I
feel flawlessly depicts this circumstance is one performed by Natasha Bedingfield in her tune,
“Strip me.” Found on her YouTube Vevo channel, the tune verses portray a man that is frantic to
Morals and Pop Culture Society
7
be heard. No matter what you do to them, they will always have their voice. Even reading the
lines of the song, it is clear that they show the importance of speaking up (Kellner).
“It’s your specialty and say that makes you your identity/Makes you consider it, consider
it doesn’t make it/Sometimes all it takes is one voice.” (Strip) These lines say a lot about the
energy of popular culture and what these individuals speak to. All you require is one voice to
have any effect on the planet. So, while West is right in some courses about his perspective on
popular culture, he was distant when it came to exactly how powerful it can be when utilized as a
part of the correct way.
Subsequent to taking a business course last semester, we found out about the three phases
of intellectual advancement including the Post-Conventional stage where a man lives by their
particular arrangement of ethics and submits to them. Individuals who are at the PostConventional level have a capable provision of good esteems that they will live by regardless. In
the event that they have a solid feeling about a specific issue, they will act as per their particular
sentiments on the issue in spite of what the mainstream supposition regarding the matter is.
In the event that somebody feels emphatically enough about how the issue individuals are
dealt with in America, all it takes is for one individual to be in this phase with the goal for there
to be a development. West appears to neglect the power even one voice can have on general
public. In Bedingfield’s music video, there is where she is putting on a show to tear away at her
chains and is lying in a room canvassed in the soil, yet regardless she hollers out. “I’m just a
single voice in a million/But you aren’t taking that from me.” (Vevo).
This line of the tune is the most essential. To bring attention to societal issues through
popular culture, all it takes is one individual to talk up. It doesn’t make a difference in the event
that it conflicts with social standards. On the off chance that somebody has confidence in reason,
Morals and Pop Culture Society

all they require is one individual to get begin an exchange (Page 123). These individuals, these
good examples in the present popular culture can be crucial to our general public.
Pop culture, otherwise called popular culture, may allude to a bunch of social
correspondence stations extending from print based media, TV, promoting, radio, motion
pictures, books, popular music, jazz music, and even funnies. At the turn of the twentieth
century, “high workmanship” was the hold of the well-off and taught in the public arena which at
last prompted the development of a “low craftsmanship” (otherwise called famous
craftsmanship) for the advantage of the lower classes (Page 123). The stratification sort of failed
out in the 1950s when popular culture turned out to be more mainstream over the distinctive
societal partitions. By the 1960s, specialists started consolidating popular culture with frames
like symbolism, promotions, funnies and even films that were adjusted from high workmanship
(Page 123).
Throughout the years, numerous speculations on popular culture have risen. For example,
the refined hypothesis looks to liken popular culture to moral decadence. Endorsers of this
school of thought trust that popular culture is a danger to the cutting-edge human progress. Some
contend that popular culture unmitigatedly undermines the critical esteems that are instructed by
religion, human progress and workmanship when all is said in done (Page 123). Incidentally,
high workmanship likewise has what’s coming to it’s of the exceptionally same backfire.
The other intriguing hypothesis of popular culture is the dialogic hypothesis. This
hypothesis depicts popular culture as an amalgamation of various culture industry
manifestations. That would suggest that different groups take part underway of both culture and
counter-culture components, which eventually make up the popular culture (Page 123). The
hypothesis additionally takes a gander at the purchasers of popular culture as literary poachers
Morals and Pop Culture Society
9
since they rush to adjust the content to fit altogether different situations as event requests. This,
as Jenkins watches, is the motivation behind why the purchasers effectively make their social
personalities through getting and altering mass culture and consequently championing causes
that would some way or another be disregarded by prevailing press (Page 123).
The subversive culture is ostensibly the most intriguing of popular culture speculations. It
stipulates that popular culture has characteristic capacity to challenge the standards in the public
arena. An awesome case is the Dixie Chicks political challenge which prompted authoring of
another verb “to be Dixie Chicked.” (Page 123). Another great outline is Avatar, a film that is
against mining, hostile to corporate and against military but then has rounded up more than 2
billion dollars. The motion picture challenges the standard and rather advances nature most
profound sense of being and environmentalism (Page 123).
Popular culture is quite recently that-well known. On the off chance that history is
anything to pass by, at that point we can securely express that popular culture is a power that
can’t be ceased – particularly since it is extremely undefined (Fiske). Throughout the decades,
popular culture has transformed taking diverse structures and affecting speculation in the public
eye. Has it molded our reasoning as well as it has formed our conviction framework as well
(Page 123). Nonetheless, regardless of whether popular culture will keep on growing more
grounded throughout the years is liable to talk about and the truth will surface eventually.
Popular culture gets individuals talking. It is a fundamental apparatus in our regular daily
existences that advantages our general public by uncovering these imperative subjects. West
raises legitimate focuses that popular culture has negative consequences for society, in any case,
circumstances are different for the production of his exposition. How might he have predicted
the extension of a mainstream culture that appears to develop exponentially with each passing
Morals and Pop Culture Society
10
year? Mainstream culture is practically fundamental to regular day to day existence now, and it
can be a vital asset in changing American culture by effortlessly enabling data to be shared
among a large number of more individuals.
