Dear Dr.Kun Zhang,
We have concluded our testing of the coarse and fine aggregate samples you
provided us. As per your test request letter, we have conducted AASHTO T27-l 4
Standard Method of Test for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates, AASHTO
T304-11 Standard Method of Test for Uncompacted Void Content of Fine Aggregate,
AASHTO T335-09 Standard Method of Test for Determining the Percentage of
Fracture in Coarse Aggregate, ASTM D479 l Flat and Elongated Particles in Coarse
Aggregate, AASHTO T84-13 Standard Method of Test for Specific Gravity and
Absorption of Coarse Aggregate, and AASHTO T85-l 4 Standard Method of Test for
Specific Gravity and Absorption of Fine Aggregates.
Based on these tests, we were able to determine the gradation distribution of the
fine and coarse aggregates, the uncompacted void ratio of the fine aggregate, the
percentage of fracture in the coarse aggregate, the percentage of flat or elongated
particles .in the coarse aggregate, the specific gravity and absorption of fine
aggregate, and the specific gravity and absorption of coarse aggregate. From
AASHTO T27-l 4, the mass lot during the sieve analysis was determined as 0.69%,
which is greater than and fails the requirement of 0.2% maximum allowed loss.
From AASHTO T304-l l, the average uncompacted void ratio for fine aggregate was
determined as 0.478 or 47.8%, which is greater than and satisfies the minimum
requirement of 45%. From AASHTO T335-09, the percentage of fracture for the
coarse aggregate was determined as 70.1%, which is lesser than and/ails the
minimum requirement o/ 90%. From ASTM D4791, the percentage of flat or
elongated particles in coarse aggregate was determined as 14%, which is greater
than and fails the maximum requirement of 10%. From AASHTO T84l 3, the bulk specific gravity, apparent specific gravity, and absorption of the coarse
aggregate were determined as 2.754, 2.950, and 2.4% respectively. From AASHTO
T85-14, the bulk specific gravity, apparent specific gravity, and absorption of the
fine aggregate were determined as 2. 714, 2.957, and 3.0% respectively. These
results show that the aggregate only passed 1 of the 4 test requirements.
Thank you for your attention on this matter. I believe that this report presents the
detailed results and explanations of each testing method. These results are honest
and accurate, in my opinion.
Sincerely,
eeeeeee
Discussion
As previously mentioned, this aggregate only passed 1 of the 4 test requirements. It
failed the sieve analysis (%mass lost = 0.69%, which is greater than the 0.2%
maximum requirement), the percentage of facture in coarse aggregate (%fracture =
70.l%, which is lower than the 90% minimum requirement), the percentage of flat
or elongated particles in coarse aggregate (%flat or elongated = 14.l%, which is
greater than the 10% maximum requirement). It passed the uncompacted void ratio
of fine aggregate passed (UVC = 47.8%, which is greater than the 45% minimum
requirement).
