Research Methods and Audience Analysis
Data Collection
Data will be collected from college students, I strongly feel that the campaign will be more effectively on college students. It is mainly because they are the transition group and more likely to
make changes.
Firstly, quantitative data will be collected from college students in Northeastern University.
The ideal number of participants would be 400 people and it will be divided by two groups, which
are nonsmoking and smoking group. There will be 200 nonsmoking participants and smoking participants join in the survey below. It is significant to know the size of simple, We can get the
accurate percentages of college student who used regular cigarette from the quantitative data. Secondly, there are different smoking categories among college students, such as, college students
who never smoking, occasional smoking, regular smokers and heavy smokers. In this section, it is
also critical to get the percentage of usage of cigarette per day among collage students. In addition,
their positive or negative opinions of secondhand smoking and their own health issues’ answer
will be significant because the answer could know their behavior awareness. Asking about if there
was a replacement product of regular cigarette, is it possible to using this products and try to quit
regular cigarette, these two questions could see the audiences responding of the replacement products. I feel that those are necessary data for this health campaign because those issues suggest the
quantity of college student using cigarette per day and to identity whether they are occasional
smokers, regular smokers or heavy smokers. The opinions they claimed about secondhand affects
showed the clue that whether they are care or not about their parents, peers or the society. Also if
they believed regular cigarette could be replaced, it is helpful for the later analysis and the build
the argument that e-cigarette is better than regular cigarette. Questions in this section will include:
How often do you smoke per day?
1~3 cigarettes
4~7 cigarettes
1 pack or more
Do you think secondhand smoking is matter to you and your environments?
Yes
No
Do you care about your own health issue?
Yes
No
Would you use the E-Cigarette to replace regular cigarette?
Yes
No
If yes, would you use it in long-term and not using regular cigarette anymore?
Yes
Maybe
No
How long have you been using e-cigarette?
Three months
Six months
One year or more
On the other hand, the data collection should be more specific. Therefore, I also choose the
second method, which is qualitative data to collected. Be more specific, I would like to use interview for my target group because the interview will also give the later analyze more in details. The
interviewer in this section will be those regular smokers, who transfer to using e-cigarette.The
interview questions will include:
Why you decide to using e-cigarette rather than regular cigarette?
Do you think e-cigarette help you to quit regular cigarette?
Do you feel any changes about your own current health?
Project Design
The primary audiences of this campaign would be college students who smoke in Northeastern University. The purpose of this campaign is to educate that e-cigarette is better than regular
cigarette because it is better for our environment and also their health. The aim of this health campaign is not let them quit smoking completely because for some heavy smokers, it is hard to quit.
But find a different method to decrease their using regular cigarette and reduce the second hand
smoking in our environment. The Northeastern students will be the target audiences, it is primarily
because they are the group that have their own thoughts but also have chances to make changes. It
is necessary for college smokers to better understand the harmfulness of the secondhand smoking
to their peers, parents and environment. The most essential thing is to help college smokers be
more focus on how regular cigarette affects their own health issue. Also, to be more effective, I
will mention a data base about the cost between regular cigarette and e-cigarette. The secondary
audiences will be their friends who play an influential and important role in their college life. Also
friends have the closest relationship that could influence or shape college students. Moreover, I
choose friends to be the second audience rather than parents. It is mainly because for college students, they tend to talk their personal habits or interests to their friends but not parents. Therefore,
it would be better for college student’s friends to acknowledge that the advantages of e-cigarette
is more beneficial than regular cigarette. After the second audiences understand that e-cigarette
could contributes plenty of health benefits, they may change themselves first and promote the idea
to the first audiences.
Campaign Design
Campaign Channels
For this health campaign, I will use Interpersonal communication be the primary channel
and the second one will be mass media because these two could let the campaign be more effective
and willing to achieve the goal.
Interpersonal channel is a efficient way to use and communicate, especially when detailed
information is needed. Furthermore, event planning in university could be a good platform to deliver the campaign message to audiences. It is mainly because college students are the primary
target audiences. Actually , Campus is the place that gather college students together. therefore,
the event would be an effective and significant way to communicate with target audiences. On the
other hand, the message or event from the university will be more credible than outside community
event. It will be also using the mass media, such as, school radio or TV to promote this campaign.
The mass media is an useful way to attract those who often seek the media to get the message they
want and also make a large number of audiences to know this health campaign such as, tell their
friends, peers or neighbor about this message. Be specific, I am strongly feel that the public service
announcement video (PSA) will also be a good way to promote this health campaign because for
some target audiences, they may likely to watch the commercial method to get messages. Another
good way to advertise this campaign is create posters and put them in the Northeastern campus
such as Ryder hall, Curry, Snell Library , each hall’s restroom etc.
Message Design
The goal of this campaign is to promote the advantage of using e-cigarette, so in this section,
I would like to use two method of message framing strategies. The first one that I would like to
use is fear appeal strategies and the second one is gain frames strategies. The definition of the fear
appeal is using the persuasive message to let audience feel fear or threat of impending danger or
harm. It shows the risk and may or may not to give suggestion of protection to the audiences.
Therefore, this strategies is fit to my first part of the campaign because Smoking is likely to be
one’s habit and it is an unhealthy or bad habit. Therefore , i think fear appeal will be a best option
of the first part message framing. Using this method will effect my first audience – Northeastern
students start to know the disadvantage or negative effects of using regular cigarette. The second
part of campaign will be using gain frames strategies. It is mainly because this strategies could let
Northeastern students began to know the positive effects of using e-cigarette and also lead them to
think that “you will live longer if you quit to smoke regular cigarettes”. Because of the first part
is using the fear appeal strategy and it may cause some fear mentality of it. Therefore, I believe
that the second part of campaign using gain frames is the best option. The gain frames could help
the audiences diminish the barriers, risks and fears that students may have. To make the delivery
message be effectively, the campus events and all the social media in campus will be an effective
platform for my target audience. The reason is that those community information or events could
make the message credible and attract the target audience received it quickly and believe it.
Evaluation
The health campaign will be checked for each month, which could get the accurate percentage
of changing among audiences. The campaign will be implemented over one year from 2018 January to 2019 January. I choose to doing the campaign in that period because we could see how they
change in campus and also the transformation in summer vacation or winter break. The percentages
of variation between regular smoker change to be e-cigarette smokers will be the primarily evaluating.
Data collection
It need to be collected more data among the primary audience, such as do you start to using
e-cigarette, when you change it, after they using e-cigarette what the feeling of it, are they still
using regular cigarette and do they feel they quit the regular cigarette. Those data will be collected
by survey and interview by every three months during this one year period. This data helps to
know the changing from college student using regular cigarette to e-cigarette and their behavior
change of the smoking. To know their changing is necessary and essential to this campaign because
the main idea for this health campaign is to help them transition between regular cigarette to e-
cigarette. Consequently, it is important to know their transformation and evaluate how many people know about this campaign in each three months, such as behavior awareness. Through those
data could help me to see the campaign is whether effective or not.
For my secondary audience, which is college students’ friends. I believe that the attitude
of using regular cigarette transfer to using e-cigarette is significant to this campaign. Because their
thought of changing will influence my primary audience. Therefore, the data of the secondary
audiences’ perspective will be also collected by each three months, which could see the percentages of how many secondary audiences tell the primary audiences that e-cigarette is better than
regular cigarette.
Conclusion
Discussion
In the present day, there are more and more college students begin to smoking regular
cigarette. They always create the secondhand smoking phenomenon to the community and society.
Some of them never think about the negative effect to others body and their own health issue. Also
for some heavy smokers, they already get used to smoking regular cigarette. Consequently, it is
really hard for them to quit it. For this health campaign, it will not focus on helping people to quit
smoking regular cigarette, but promote to using e-cigarette.
The research shows that cigarette smoking among college students increased markedly
during the 1990s, and more than one-fourth of U.S. college students currently smoke cigarettes
(Rigotti, Lee, & Wechsler, 2000; Wechsler, Rigotti, Gledhill-Hoyt, & Lee, 1998). Non-daily
smoking is common among this age group (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003).
Therefore, if no one prevent it, it will cause more and more students smoking regular cigarette.
The fact will be increase the health problems and contaminate the community environment.
For some college students, they tend do smoking is mainly because it seems fancy or cool
in front of their friends. Even in some states, they establish only above 21 years old adults could
buy cigarettes in shop, but there are still an enormous number of students find different ways to
get the regular cigarette. At home, parents always educate that smoking is not a good habit, but
when students grow up they will not listen to them anymore. However, the health campaign runs
in campus is essential way to influence those smokers.
The campaign is trying to bring some good advices and efforts on educating Northeastern
students and their friends about how harmful the regular cigarettes is, what the benefits of the ecigarette and we should consider to using e-cigarette to replace the regular cigarette. In the campaign, Northeastern students and their friends should understand the disadvantage of regular cigarettes and what kind of health problems they probably will get. In the meantime, my audiences
should also understand that even regular cigarettes are hard to quit, but we still have some other
ways to decrease those health problems and also help our surrounding people have a good environment.
Challenges
I think one of the challenge will be how to make those Northeastern students believe that
e-cigarette is better than regular cigarette and why they should replace it. Most students would
think that e-cigarette and regular cigarette are same thing, they both harmful for their health. Therefore, it is kind of challenge to use health campaign to educate them why e-cigarette is better than
regular cigarette and all the Northeastern students who using regular cigarettes should start to using
e-cigarette.
Another challenge would be the events and social media in school may cause some nonsmokers began to using e-cigarette. However, how to prevent the nonsmokers try to using e-ciagarette, it should be a significant challenge in this campaign because we do not want more nonsmokers to starting smoking in anyway. The social norm also cause some social smokers, such as
if someone suddenly start to smoking cigarette in a party, their friends may think he is weird. It
may cause the smoker back to using regular cigarette again. On the other hand, the school policy
may not encourage this health campaign promote in school, especially in Northeastern University
because it is smoking free campus. It is hard to persuade school allowing to implement this health
campaign. In consequently, it has to find a better way to target those issue, such as school, and
those nonsmokers. On the other hand, it is essential to point out that the e-cigarette is target to
those heavy smokers who using regular cigarette and make them understand that helping those
heavy smokers to using e-cigarette will benefit to the university and community. For those nonsmoker, it should warn them even the e-cigarette is less harmful than the regular cigarette, but
nonsmokers should not try to use e-cigarette in anyway or time.
Future Research
In this health campaign, the Northeastern students and their friends become the primary
and secondary audiences. But people who smoking regular cigarette not just in university, there
are much more people smoking regular cigarette. therefore, the future campaign could expand the
target audiences to be abroad, such as, parents or peers. When we research more audiences, we
could know more details about those smokers. Also the research in this campaign could provide
plenty of useful information. For example, this campaign could provide what the percentages of
Northeastern smokers and what’s their opinion about using e-cigarette rather than regular cigarette.
So, the information could help the future research to predict or study more about what the total
college smokers in our society and how to improve the campaign to make audience know more
knowledge about e-cigarette.
Another future research could be more details, such as, the reasons why they start to smoking regular cigarettes and when they begin to smoke regular cigarette. It is important for future
research because it could help the future campaign be more pertinence and help more smokers to
quit smoking.
Future research could also figure out the benefits of e-cigarette, like some college smokers
after using e-cigarette, they begin to quit smoking. Therefore, the future research could study this
case in more details. Researchers may study why e-cigarette is the product that can help people
quit smoking. If so, are there have any better products could help smokers to quit smoking completely.
