To complete this assignment, you must:
1) Find a Newspaper article relevant to an archaeological site. This article must be from the
popular press (not an academic journal article). The article should be less than a year old, but
older than 2 months. Make sure it is still “current” but predates the start of class.
2) Summarize the article. This may take some additional background research, but don’t go
overboard. Be sure to include basic information about the location of the archaeological site, its
age, and the people (cultural group) it is associated with. What were the latest findings at the
site? What makes it famous? If it was already a famous site, explain how this recent discovery
may have changed how it has been interpreted/perceived.
3) Critique the article. Is it well written? Does it portray archaeological concepts
accurately? How much supplemental background research did you need to do to be able to
answer basic questions about the site and its context to your satisfaction? Does it portray any
national, regional, or theoretical biases? Does it jump to outrageous conclusions? If so, what are
some simpler explanations you could offer? Your critique does not need to answer all of these
questions. These questions are just suggestions of ways MOST, if not all, popular articles about
archaeology can be critiqued.
Come to class prepared to discuss what the problems with the article are and how you think
archaeology could be better communicated to the general public.
Total paper should be a maximum of about 2 double-spaced pages in length with 1-inch margins
and Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
Please include either a hard copy or an internet link of the newspaper article attached to your
assignment.
