As discussed in earlier readings, one’s moral principle lies with what one
considers to be rifht or wrong. Asking the question of whether morality enters
the suicide equation, can only be considered if those committing suicide were in
agreement with thhe philosophies that don’t support suicide.
In the case of Joan and Chester Nimitz, both were intelligent and competent
individuals who decided on a course of action to end their lives. The couple
recognized as they aged, they were dealing with issues of pain, debilitation and
lack of independence. Therefore, the couple decided they committing suicide was
in their best interest. Both reported that they had no religious affiliations
and shared their plan openly with their family. Neither Joan nor Chester were
coerced or pushed into making this decision and there was no evidence of mental
illness or any other contributing factors. Further evidence revealed, that the
Nimitzs researched their decision and were members of the Hemlock Society which
was a national right-to -die organization. (Cohen, 2013)Deciding to take their
lives was based on their own personal beliefs and further supported and
acceptance provide by their children.
If we used the deontological philosophy, their suicide would be considered
immoral because whether you commit suicide or assist with someone elses suicide
this went against the Bible teachings. Based on the details provided the couple
was justified in their decision to commit suicide. (Caplan & Arp, 2014)
In reading the final details of their death, Chesters act of securing a plastic
bag over his wifes head was grizzly to say the least, but could be interpreted
to actions that assisted in her death and could be considered illegal, however
both were in agreement to the actions leading to their death.
Committing suicide under these circumstances was a personal choice, however in
situations where individuals kill themselves because they are severely
depressed, coerced, have existing co-morbidities including a history of suicide
attempts and substance abuse or any scenario where ones mental health and
cognitive abilities are impaired or questionable cannot be summed up as a
personal choice. Suicide resulting under these scenarios are tragic, preventable
and cannot be accepted.
