Paper #1: Narration/Oral Presentation
(250-300 words)
This paper will also serve as a diagnostic as I will comment on areas in
which you need to improve your writing immediately, before you write the next
paper.
Paper #1 Topic
Time limit: 2 minutes total.
Part 1: One minute: You should write a one-minute piece about your experience
in writing over the course of your education. This can include what classes have
required writing and your overall experience in writing for your academic pursuits.
Use chronological order for this section.
Part 2: One minute: You will give an overall view of your goals for this class.
What do you wish to accomplish? Which aspects of writing do you look forward
to and which do you wish to learn more about?
A. You will need a microphone to do this. If you don’t have a microphone
in your computer or phone and can’t get one, let me know and we will do a
phone-in version.
You should plan an interesting beginning with a clear thesis, present
salient points, and conclude effectively, restating your thesis. Don’t use second
person, “you.”
If there is a word you are not sure about how to pronounce, use
http://www.merriam-webster.com which has a pronunciation tool.
B. Submit the text of your paper and the MP3 or MP4 file via the link
under Course Content in the folder for Paper #1. Remember that this is a written
and an oral assignment and half of your grade will be focused on the oral delivery
of your content. See the Definition of Concepts and Rubric below.
Definitions of Concepts and Rubric: Total Points Possible 20 points.
Any oral presentation begins with a written script so that the speaker plans
his presentation thoroughly. The written script is then delivered. For this
assignment, you should not speak extemporaneously. You must write your
paper according to the requirements below and then deliver that paper as a
script.
Part One: Written component, the Script (10 points possible). Important: Your
script must adhere to the time limit for the oral presentation of two minutes.
1. Focus (0-2 points possible): Focus is the extent to which the content of
the presentation corresponds to the central idea of the presentation. In other
words, good focus means that the central idea drives the whole presentation.
Each section, then, focuses on presenting and developing the central idea with
logical reasoning, supportive evidence, and correct documentation.
Assignment’s Requirements: The presentation must relate to what the
instructor has set forth in the assignment and include all required parts.
2. Organization (0 -2 points possible): Relates to the order in which ideas
are presented in support of the central idea. The introduction, body and
conclusion are developed in a logical, sequential order with clear transitions, and
evidence is organized within each section. An artifact with good developments
includes supportive reasoning and evidence that build on each other as the
document unfolds.
3. Style/Mechanics (0-6 points possible): The way in which words and
sentences are put together. Good style involves word choice, sentence
structure, and tone appropriate for the rhetorical situation. For an oral
presentation, students should use an academic tone and be professional in their
tone. Employ correct grammar and mechanics.
Part Two: Oral component (10 points possible)
4. Volume and inflection (0-2 points): Be sure to speak loudly enough to
be heard and vary the tone of your voice to add interest: avoid monotone.
5. Fluency (0-2 points): limited use of filler words (“umm,” “like,” etc.). No
long pauses. You should practice delivering the script several times before you
record it to submit.
6. Pronunciation and articulation (0-2 points): Pronounce all words
correctly. If you don’t know the correct pronunciation, consult www.merriamwebster.com for help as there is a pronunciation link for each word. Once you
are sure you have the correct pronunciation, be sure to articulate that
pronunciation so that the listener can understand. Don’t mumble.
7. Tone(0-2 points): natural, not stilted delivery. Speak with an audience,
not at them.
8. Pace (0-2 points): Not too fast or too slow. There should also be a
variety of pace for interest. Also Limit the use of filler words (“umm,” “like,” etc.).
