Overview
The concept of mythology is not new to most people, as many encounter Greek and Roman mythology
in high school or through television and movies. The definitions of myth you encounter in this course,
however, are likely to be something new. Instead of treating myths as fictional stories the unit lecture,
Myth, Part One: Myth as Noun and Verb, defines myth as a noun (“stories cultures tell themselves”) and
as a verb (“a way to make meaning in the world”) that communicate deeper truths about life. For this
assignment, you will experiment with these definitions of myth by taking on the role of a parent or some
other adviser to a teenage student of myth.
Instructions
Assume the role of a parent (or other influential adult) to a teenager who has a school assignment to
read and watch movies about a specific (unnamed) culture’s religious myths. Complaining that they are
just absurd old stories, your teen rebels against the idea of treating them seriously and complains that
kids should not have to study religion in school anyway. Write your teen an e-mail in which you
demonstrate what he or she can learn from studying myth, based on the ideas about myth from the unit
lecture. Use examples from your textbook readings about Hinduism and Native American or African
cultures. Explain also how myths are present in popular culture materials with which your teen is
engaging.
You are required to research only in the Capella Library for this assignment.
