Making Well-Informed Decisions
There are six steps that are explained that decision-makers should take in order to make
well-informed decision:
Framing the question: framing the issue that needs to be addressed in the form of a
question in order to locate research studies on the topic. This question can be specific,
but may need to be adjusted to get more research results.
Finding sources of information: There is a wide array of information that is available and
many sources of information to pull from. The internet will be the main source that
decision-makers use to locate research. There are also libraries, webmasters,
consultants, and know experts. The reading discusses using Google Scholar, the National
Library of Medicine Gateway, or websites that provide system reviews.
Assessing the accuracy of information: this is probably the most important step as it
addresses the validity of a research. The context of the research should be clearly
explained, the research design should be well laid out as well as the data collection
process. A thorough analysis of the subjects of the study, data, motives should be done
and then assess the validity of the findings.
Assessing the applicability of information: this basically assesses whether or not the
information is comparable to the organization’s population, operational environment,
and comparable to the desired outcomes.
Assessing the actionability of information: this answer whether the research contains
information on what needs to be done. Good information provided specific examples,
provides information on how to accomplish it, and explains how to monitor the
effectiveness
Determining if the information is adequate: when deciding what information is the
strongest, you have to consider what is appropriate for your organization with regards
to needs and values. Information that is desirable may be what the decision-maker
should use, but there may be more than one option to choose from. On the other hand,
the information may not be desirable at all. Nonetheless, the reading explains that this
allows for communication, helps develop solutions, and helps to evaluate future effects.
