LEADERSHIP OF PROCTER & GAMBLE CO.
1
Jon R. Moeller: Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of Procter & Gamble Co.
Jon R. Moeller is an American businessman born in 1964. At the present time, he serves
as the Chief Financial Officer of Procter & Gamble. He is married to Lisa Sauer, who is said to
have encouraged him to join Procter & Gamble after she had worked there for her internship. As
shown below, Moeller had had several job positions at Procter & Gamble, as he has joined the
company in 1988 and his ascendance on the corporate ladder was not particularly fast.
Procter & Gamble Co. is considered to be one of the most important American consumer
goods corporation. The company has its headquarter in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is functioning since
1837. The company is specialized in several cleaning agents and hygienic products, and it used
to include snacks, foods, and beverage before it sold Pringles to the Kellogg Company. Because
Procter & Gamble is a huge company, many of its executives are a high-profile person, that is
worth the attention of those studying leadership and corporate success. One such example is Jon
Moeller.
Jon Moeller was born in Chicago, Illinois. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology
in 1986 from the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Two years later he
also received an M.B.A. from the same university.
Moeller joined Procter & Gamble on September 1, 1988, but it was not until 2007 that he
gained a clearly important position in the company, namely that of Vice President. The company
was likely very happy with his job as a Vice President, as he became Chief Financial Officer
only two years later. Beside his activities at Procter & Gamble, Moeller is also a lecturer at the
Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, is part of the Board of Directors of
Monsato, the Council for Division Finance Leaders of the Conference Board and member of the
Executive Committee of the Cincinnati Commercial Club. Since he joined Procter & Gamble,
Moeller has had several types of financial roles, including assignments for the finance of global
beauty, corporate forecasting, and leading of food and beverage departments in assail. He has
also had important roles in several posts within the food and beverage and beverage business
(Anthony, Viguerie & Waldeck, 2016).
Moeller has experienced considerable successful financial success since he joined Procter
& Gamble. For instance, it is estimated that his CFO position brought him $7.04 million, which
is much more than what most public executives make and a bit more than what other executives
at Procter & Gamble make. A better insight into Moeller’s financial status can be obtained from
the following data:
$850,000 salary, which is not the highest salary among executives at Procter & Gamble.
$671,69 bonus, which is a considerable higher bonus compared to the one obtained by
most public executives but less than the bonus received by other executives at Procter & Gamble.
$4.21 million in restricted stock awards, which corresponds to much more than the
executive restricted stocks award received by most public executives and also more than the ones
received by other executives at Procter & Gamble.
$1.22 million in option awards, which is much more than the value obtained by most
public executives but significantly less than the one obtained by the average Procter & Gamble
executives.
$87,859 in other compensations, which is significantly more than the value obtained by
most public executives but less than the compensations received by other Procter & Gamble
executives.

The financial success of Moeller is likely explained by his expertise and success in the
company. For instance, he has gained important experience in several Procter & Gamble
businesses, including beauty and health and laundry and cleaning sectors. Moeller has also
played an important role in leading important operations of merger and acquisitions, such as the
well-known Wella acquisition. As a vice president, Moeller arguably puts Protect & Gamble in a
positive financial position for both the long- and the short-term. This latter achievement was
possible through the roles it had in establishing capital structure and managing cash, functions
that took place during the lead of Acquisitions and Divestitures group and Investor Relations
(Anthony, Viguerie & Waldeck, 2016).
From the information provided above, it can be easily inferred that Moeller had gained
important financial and management experience through the 28 years that he spent working at
one of the world’s most important multi-national companies. His activities as treasurer and
division vice president for finance and accounting and as a chief financial officer has given
Moeller a strong understanding of accounting and financial issues that global manufacturing
companies face. Besides his vast financial experience, Moeller has gained experiences related to
compliance and risk management, which likely helped him provide important contributions when
oversight audit, finance, corporate, and nominating committees. The function of the senior
financial executive has helped Moeller develop and execute important global strategies for the
company. Finally, Moeller has had important roles in the international complex, as he resided
outside the U.S. in the quality of an important member of management. Because he has gained
international business experience, Moeller is able to provide to senior management and fellow
directors important insights regarding global strategies of both domestic and international
business based on specific financial goals.
While Moeller has played an important role at Procter & Gamble, it is difficult to infer
whether his leadership approach has brought particular outcomes to the company that would not
have been possible without his presence. Without a doubt that company has had several
successes since he has taken executive functions, as the business has continued to grow. Moeller
has also benefited from the company, and considering the high incentives he has received from it
combined with the fact that his position in the company has not been challenged suggests that the
company is happy with him.
In conclusion, Moeller had had several job positions at Procter & Gamble, as he has
joined the company in 1988 and his ascendance on the corporate ladder was not particularly fast,
as it was only in 2007 that he gained a more prominent position in the company, that of Vice
President. That being said, he remains one of the most noticeable figures from his company and
his leadership style is to be studied.
