LM 4.4
Cardiovascular
System: Blood
Pressure LAB
SPRING 2017
Objectives
▪ Explain how systemic arterial blood pressure is normally
measured.
▪ Differentiate between hypotension, normal blood pressure, and
hypertension.
▪ Complete the lab report on blood pressure.
2
Measuring systemic arterial blood pressure
▪ Sphygmomanometer
▪ 1st sound: systolic
pressure
▪ Sound lost: diastolic
pressure
Fig. 5.7 (Mader & Windelspecht, 2015)
3
Procedure for measuring BP
▪ Obtain a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope.
▪ Wipe the cuff and ear pieces gently with alcohol wipes.
▪ Dry the cuff gently with paper towel.
▪ Place the cuff around the brachium so that it’s snug but not tight.
▪ Place the stethoscope over the brachial artery.
▪ Quickly inflate the cuff to 150 mm Hg. (Go higher if needed.)
▪ Slowly let the air out. The first sound will be the systolic pressure.
When you first stop hearing sound, that’s the diastolic pressure.
▪ Record data:
▪ Upper number = systolic pressure; lower number = diastolic pressure
4
Experiment
▪ Have the student breath deeply and relax for at least 30 seconds.
▪ Use the sphygmomanometer to measure resting BP. Record data.
▪ Have the student run quickly in place for 90 seconds.
▪ Immediately have student sit and measure post-exercise BP while a
third member of the group starts a 2-minute timer. Record data.
▪ At the end of two minutes of rest after exercise, measure blood
pressure again. Record data.
▪ Repeat to get data from 2 people per group (minimum of 10 from
class).
5
Student condition information
▪ Test subjects were asked if they:
▪ lead a sedentary lifestyle?
▪ do aerobic exercise on a regular basis?

Lab report
▪ Write an hypothesis regarding the effect of exercise on blood
pressure.
▪ Include data table. At the beginning of the results, state that the
data we used was collected by students in a previous semester.
▪ Explain your results and whether they support or refute your
hypothesis. Did exercise increase BP? Did BP decrease after
resting? Why are these expected?
▪ Use the table on next slide to determine whether any students had
abnormal blood pressures at rest. Use the information you collected
about student condition to explain.
▪ Be sure to include your APA-style reference citations! (textbook/lab
manual)
