Man Tunes
Instructions & Grading Rubric
This assignment is meant to improve critical thinking skills, particularly in connection with evaluating popular culture’s
views on fathering and families using a biocultural framework. It is also intended to help you reflect on men and
fatherhood in your personal life. You will select a song that relates to the course materials, write a well-developed outline,
and then write a final essay.
Overall, think about 3 things:
● The song’s message(s)
● Course concepts
● Personal connection
General Instructions
1) Sign-Up: Select a song that relates to the course materials on fatherhood or mate selection and enter it into the “Man
Tunes sign-up” (this is a Google doc with link in D2L in “Start Here” or Contents->Man Tunes). Your song cannot be
one already listed by another student. (Google docs can track changes so please enter the actual date you listed your
song.) You can only have one song listed on this documnt at a time. You can change your song anytime you like, but
you must still only have one song listed at any time — you many not reserve multiple songs. Once you submit your
outline about a song, you cannot change to a different song.
In preparation for the Teaching Team appointment, download the Man Tunes Form (found in D2L under Content->Man
Tunes) and fill out the Part I (song information) and have a rough draft ready for Part II (outline).
❖ Man Tunes Instructions & Grading Rubric (this document)
❖ Man Tunes Form (filled out as much as possible)
3) References & Citations: To support your thesis statement, you are required to use:
• 1 article from the textbook and
• 1 (or more) external peer-reviewed articles
• American Psychological Association (APA) format for the references page and in-text citations
• You may not use direct quotes or copy the text from a reference. You must paraphrase or summarize the idea from
the reference. Plagiarism will not be tolerated!
These resources are helpful for finding articles:
o Watch the video posted in Contents >Man Tunes on “What is a peer-reviewed article?”
o Use the Library Tools (see top menu in D2L) to find resources, such as:
§ Web of Science database
§ Academic Search Complete
o You will probably use other sources of information such as websites or class lectures. Make sure the
websites are reliable sources. (If you are not sure, ask a librarian by going to Library Tools then scroll
down to “Ask a Library Question” chat box.) You should list all sources in the “References” section.
o In your essay, you are not analyzing the peer-reviewed articles. You are using information and ideas from
the articles as support/evidence for your essay’s thesis.
These resources are helpful for learning about APA format:
o Library Tools tab also has “Citation Style Guides” which shows the APA style citation we require.
There you will find a handy website called the Online Writing Lab (OWL) which shows you the format
for different kinds of references and how to do in-text citations:
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/05/
o
o
o
o
Your References section should list your sources in APA format.
You can look at the first page of each of the reading in the textbook. At the bottom is the reference in
APA format.
For citing your references within the text of your paper, use in-text citations in APA format. See “Citation
Style Guides” above. (Note: The entire paper is NOT in APA format, only the citation style and
references format.)
4) Man Tunes Delivery: Using the “Man Tunes Form” provided on D2L, submit the OUTLINE version then a FINAL
version to the D2L Assignments folder (see due dates in the course schedule). As you can see on the form, the
submission should include items such as the name of a song, genre, the performing artist, MP3 file name (or at least a
link to the song on YouTube), lyrics, the OUTLINE or FINAL essay, and information about your appointment with
the Teaching Team. You must upload your Man Tunes Form as a MS Word or PDF file.
5) Grading: The OUTLINE will be graded on the structure of your essay, such as the elements that help develop a good
piece of writing and a compelling argument. The final ESSAY will be graded on the quality of the thinking about the
content and the writing skills. Specific instructions and grading rubric for the OUTLINE and ESSAY are described below.
SONG sign-up: Instructions and Grading Rubric
a) Select a song for the Man Tunes project and enter it in the “Man Tunes sign-up” Google doc (as described above).
Make sure your song is not a duplicate! We will check the “Man Tunes sign-up” Google doc to see if another
student has already selected the song you want to use. The first person to sign-up for a song will not get penalized.
b) Jay Z is the person I want to write about.

SONG Grading Rubric (10pts)
OUTLINE of essay: Instructions and Grading Rubric
Grading of the OUTLINE will be based on the structure of your essay (100 points total)–attempting all of the
elements listed below. This is the most important part of developing a good paper. This is why the weight of the outline
reflects nearly 40% of the total points for this Man Tunes project. Using the outline structure below, you will develop a
clear and logical structure for you essay. Provide the outline in a detailed bullet form (not a fully written essay) showing
the basic idea for each element of the outline structure listed below. The outline should provide enough detail to show that
you have attempted each of the items. (In other words, don’t just put a bullet that says “-Opening attention-grabber will go
here” with no actual statement that captures the reader’s attention.) The more you put into the outline the more we will be
able to provide feedback on your ideas and understanding of concepts, and the easier it will be to write the final essay.

Man Tunes Form- Section II
Construct your OUTLINE with the structure specified below:
Introduction / Opening (25pts) must include:

A compelling attention-grabber or other introductory device (e.g., rhetorical question, compelling statistic)
Introductory information about the song (song title, artist, short description/summary of the song)
A thesis statement that relates the song to the course content (2 concepts) in a thoughtful/analytic way
Support (25pts) must include:
● Lyrics: Provide two or more pieces of evidence from the song that supports your thesis, using quotes from the
lyrics of the song (highlight those phrases in the lyrics section of the Man Tunes form).
● Concepts: Give an explanation of al least 2 course concepts that are directly relevant to your thesis (Remember,
explain it to a non-specialist audience, as if you were writing to your fellow students in a music magazine. Make
sure that you select 2 distinct concepts. Here are some examples of key concepts from the course:
Ø
Ø
Ø
Ø
Ø
Ø

Life History Trade-Offs (this includes fast & slow life history strategies)
Obligate Parental Investment
Fitness Payoff of Paternal Care
Mating Opportunity (and what limits mating opportunity)
Paternity Confidence (and what cues males may use)
Mate Preferences
And more….
Sources: Provide at least 2 reliable peer-reviewed sources (1 from the textbook, 1 or more external) to help
support your thesis, an idea, or your concept explanation. (Do not use Wikipedia, blogs, or websites—these are
not peer-reviewed sources.) You may not use direct quotes from any source. Instead, paraphrase the ideas.
Conclusion (25pts) must include:
● A summary of the thesis
● Include a personal connection—For example:
o Did the song remind you of your father?
o Did the song describe the kind of father you had?
o Did the song describe the kind of father you would like to be?
o Did the song describe a man you would like to be the father of your children?
● Take-home message or lesson to be learned
References
● Provide your potential references in APA format (learn what this format is). You should have at least:
○ 1 Textbook article as a reference
○ 1 External per-reviewed reference
● APA formatting will not be graded in the outline, but it will be graded in the Essay.
***NOTE***
● Not in outline format: Your outline will not be graded if it is submitted in essay form. You will be notified and
asked to resubmit in the correct format and you will be subjected to the late submission policy.
● Originality Report: Since this is a short essay, we do not allow any direct quotes from your sources. We
want to see your writing, not that of a published scientist. Instead, you can summarize or paraphrase the
relevant information or idea. If you paraphrase a source, you must include the reference. Don’t plagiarize—
this is serious! The Turn-It-In feature on D2L will allow the Teaching Team to see if you have copied text
from other sources. If you are suspected of plagiarism, your outline will not be graded. Depending on the
extent of copied material, you will either be given 0 points for the assignment and referred to the Dean of
Students (as the Academic Integrity policy states), or you will be asked to paraphrase your sources and
then resubmit the outline (with points deducted for lateness).
● Punctuality: If your outline is submitted late to the Assignment folder, points will be deducted:
o A bit late: If late under 1 hr then no points deducted (often this is caused by technical issues due last
minute rush to upload documents)
o A little late: If late over 1hr but under 3 hrs then deduct 2pts
o Somewhat late: If late >3hrs hr but within 24hrs then deduct 5pts
o Very late: If late >24 hrs then deduct 10pts
OUTLINE Grading Rubric (100pts)
FINAL essay: Instructions and Grading Rubric
Grading of the FINAL paper will be based on the quality of the thinking about the content and writing skills
(150 points total). The guidelines below indicate what we are looking for in the FINAL submission. In your FINAL
essay you have an opportunity to show what you know. This is where your understanding and analytical abilities, as
well as your writing skills will be evaluated. You will use the work/information you put into the OUTLINE. The
feedback from the OUTLINE will be extremely useful (especially if you provided enough detail so that we could
comment on your ideas/understanding). In order to do well on the writing aspect of the essay, having a tutor,
preceptor or someone else read the essay is highly recommended. Readers may provide feedback on the readability
(voice, word choice, sentence fluency). They may also find grammatical errors that you missed.
