Advantages and Disadvantages of Reality TV Shows
Over the last twenty years, the popularity of reality television shows has witnessed a
massive rise in popularity. Amongst the youths, reality shows have become the TV program of
choice. According to Bourn, Prichard, Hutchinson, & Wilson (2015), over half of the American
population are currently following a given reality show. Other shows such as the American Got
Talent which is intended to expose hidden unique talents in the American population records up
to ten million viewers in the USA alone. Considering the world’s viewership, the show recorded
over fifty million viewers alone. Apart from being unique, reality television shows tend to be
more appealing especially among the young. Despite the immense increase in popularity, reality
TV shows have received some form of criticism, especially from social science researchers.
Apart from having some advantages, reality television shows have some disadvantages. While
reality television shows have given talented individuals a platform to showcase their talent and
highlight social ills in the society, they have exposed children and teenagers to obscene
languages, images, and violence.
One of the main advantages of reality television shows is that they provide talented
individuals with a platform to showcase their talents. According to Eisenberg, Ward, Linde,
Gollust, & Neumark-Sztainer (2017), reality television shows such as American Got Talent and
the British Idol provides a platform for gifted singers, magicians, and other talented entertainers
to demonstrate and showcase their talent to the world. On a global scale, numerous musicians
can attribute their successful careers to reality television shows. Papacharissi & Mendelson
(2007) further suggest that when talented individuals are selected to participate in a given reality
show, they benefit by undergoing detailed training and supervision from already successful
professionals who act to train and hone their skills to excellence.

Schnurr (2017) attributes the success of international musicians such as Kelly Clarkson,
Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson to the training they underwent in the early stages of
their musical careers when they competed in different reality shows. After successfully winning
the American Idol in 2005, which was later renamed to the American Got Talent, Carrie
Underwood has become one of the most famous musicians ever. For her, the American Idol
reality show acted to kick starts her career, which has excelled since then. When she won the
inaugural American Idol reality television show in 2002, Kelly Clarkson became a household
name in not only America but also one of the most celebrated musicians in the world. Following
the triumph, she was awarded a multimillion record deal by RCA Records, which has enabled
her to attain international glory.
Apart from helping people develop their talent, reality television shows have been
instrumental in helping the identification of talent back at home. Schnurr (2017) argues that
through these shows which showcase the importance of talent, parents can learn the advantages
of talents in their children and help develop them. According to Eisenberg, et al. (2017), through
these shows, parents can discover the talents their children possess and work towards helping the
develop them rather than waiting until they are older.
Other than being a platform on which different talented individuals showcase their
talents, reality television shows are often used to create awareness on varied social issues
affecting the society. Obesity remains one of the most common problems faced by a section of
Americans. Over the years, several reality television shows have helped to highlight obesity
problem facing Americans with the concept of rewarding those who work towards losing weight
being used to encourage this. The biggest loser reality show is one such show which has been
used to showcase the issue of obesity in America. Through a platform where participants lose

weight and are rewarded for it, the show was used to create awareness on the negative health
implications of being obese and providing viewers a platform where they can watch first hand as
other people struggle with the challenge. Eisenberg, et al. (2017) argues that reality shows such
as the Biggest Loser enable other people struggling with such problems to be more confident on
addressing them. By watching others go through similar struggles as they do, these individuals
are more confident in facing their problems over time.
According to Lewin, Rajamma, & Paswan(2015), reality television shows have helped
create awareness and address numerous social injustices and introduce people to ills plaguing the
society. Through shows targeted to women, reality TV shows have been used to enhance women
empowerment by providing an active discussion platform. Through such platforms, women can
address their issues through in a manner where more people are reached and helped to become
better in life. Reality television shows have also helped highlight other social ills in the society.
According to Papacharissi & Mendelson (2007), reality television shows which highlight issues
facing teenagers have been quite successful in addressing the problems they face. While such
benefits are hard to quantify, parents and teachers have reported an improvement on how
students conduct themselves.
Other than showing the American story, reality television shows have been used to
highlight social injustices in other countries. According to Eisenberg, et al. (2017), most
American reality television programs have been produced to help audiences see more deeply into
the lives of other people. According to Lewin, et al. (2015), such shows can help enlighten the
audiences of such issues and often lead to emotional engagement on global issues. Eisenberg, et
al. (2017) argues that reality television shows have helped break down the barriers between
audiences and entertainment. Apart from this, they have provided a platform to showcase talent,

expose social ills, while at the same time exposing children and teenagers to violence, obscene
language, and images.
Exposure to obscene language, images, and violence remains one of the main
disadvantages of reality television shows. Since most reality television shows are unscripted,
they lack the control which is often installed in other common shows. According to Rubin
(2011), the fact that most shows lack the diligence editing seen with other television shows run
the risk of exposing teenagers and children to obscene languages, images, and violence. In most
shows I have watched, participants often tend to dress scantly with the intention of attracting a
large viewership. Such shows in most cases end up being watched by children and teenagers
which lead to the compromise of moral standards. Most participants usually tend to hurl insults
and use of other obscene languages to each other. According to Farnham (2010), most directors
of reality shows usually associate insults and such obscene languages to natural communication.
Others tend to encourage the use of such language as a means of attracting viewers to the shoes.
In the end, children tend to learn such words which are damaging to them. According to Rubin
(2011), the use of obscene language and insults which end up being picked by teenagers and
children affect their personality and behavior. Apart from the use of obscene languages and
insults, participants often engage in violence which is broadcasted on live television which is
often watched by teenagers and young children. Such violent shows and images often tend to
compromise the behavior of these children. According to Farnham (2010), watching violent
scenes on television often tend to encourage such behavior among children. Rubin (2011) further
argues that children are more prone to associate with things they watch on television as
compared to adults. This is because they tend to believe in such things and often tend to pick
some of these behaviors.

While reality television shows have gained a huge following in the world’s population,
they come with both advantages and disadvantages. One of the major factor, why they have
become so popular, is that they are a huge source of entertainment. While such sows tend to give
participants a platform to showcase their talents, they have been an excellent platform of
highlighting social ills in the society by being able to reach a wider audience. However, some
reality television shows tend to expose children and teenagers to obscene language, insults and
violence which tend to compromise their behavior.
