Sport-related Concussions
You need to read the outline below in order to have a better idea of the
topic and program used to prevent sport-related concussions before
they occur.
Section 1: Background information
● Introduction: Sports are significant for children and teens to build healthy bones
and muscles, to preserve them, and to reduce their chances for chronic disease and
depression. Sports programs are also important to reduce the chances of getting
concussion or other traumatic brain injury (TBI). Concussion is a “complex
pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by traumatic
biomechanical forces” (Albrecht et al., 2013; Lindback et al., 2012). Our focus on
this research is to evaluate primary prevention of concussion among young U.S.
football players, who are 13 years old and younger and lived in Howard and
Prince Georges counties. Interventions (such as educating young athletes, their
parents and coaches) will be designed to improve behaviors in reporting
concussion symptoms, appropriate care, and time to recover.
● Five risk factors: First, playing football games can be a risk factor for young
athletes (Faude et al., 2013). Unsafe playing and not following the laws and rules
of playing lead the football game to be a risk factor of getting a concussion
(Bachynski & Goldberg, 2014). Second, age plays a big role because it takes
longer to recover for those who are between 5-14 years old (Lindback et al.,
2012). The progression of neurodevelopment happens between the ages of 8-15
years old (Lindback et al., 2012). The body contact, which includes legal body
checks, for young athletes account for 86% of injuries during football games
(Bachynski & Goldberg, 2014). Third, being uneducated about the risk factors
and the right strategies of playing football can also be a risk factor of getting a
concussion. Young athletes and their parents and coaches must know about the
causes, symptoms, and of concussion (Albrecht et al., 2013). Another risk factor
is the body composition of young athletes. Faude et al. (2013) showed an
evidence about the risk of TBI of a concussion, and they found that it was lower
during practice sessions than in match play. Also, the frequency of face/head
injuries was higher for children who play matches. Lastly, the position of playing
is a risk factor of having a concussion. Playing at high speed for approximately
30-50 yards in effort to tackle and locate the opposing player who is in possession
of the football can be risky and cause harm falling that leads in getting a
concussion (Bachynski & Goldberg, 2014).
Program: The primary data is to review and observe one club team from both
Howard and Prince George’s counties regarding sport-related concussions. We
will do one hour in-person interviews with football players who are 13 years old
and younger, their parents, and coaches. The interview will be specifically with
the Western Howard county Warhawks and Prince George’s county Bears club
teams. Our program is that we will go to Howard and Prince George’s counties to
educate club teams, their parents, and coaches. Our program starts in August of
2018, and the lesson plan timeline will be a maximum of sixty minutes. The first
forty-five minutes will be about the introduction to concussions and a class
icebreaker, concussion video, discussion about the video, education on signs,
symptoms, and concussion procedures/protocols with models and scenarios. The
last fifteen minutes are for the assessment. Our program will be effective because
the goals of it are to decrease the number of concussions, decrease the intensity
and frequency of head impacts, increase the rate of reporting of concussion
symptoms experienced by young athletes when they occur, and increase the rate
of removal of football players from play when concussion symptoms are reported.
We will then keep in touch with the club teams in both counties to monitor
progression of concussion prevention.
● Summary: Therefore, the five risk factors that result in having a concussion for a
young football players are age, playing the football games, being uneducated
about the safest play, body composition, and the position of playing.
Section 2: Purpose of the Grant
● The purpose of this research is to develop and pilot test a new intervention, or
rigorously evaluate an existing intervention, that aims to advance primary
prevention of concussion among young athletes participating in youth sports
programs.
Section 3: Resources
● We will need 7 computers (cost $1,575) for each person, 2 projectors (cost
$27.96) one for each educator, in case they are not available in the visited centers,
and 2 human skulls (cost $211.88) one for each educator, for visual learning.
Also, people who are involved in this program are two undergraduate educators
(cost $106,000 per year) for 45 min presentation at first practice or before the first
practice, five implementers who are the group members. The two educators will
be recruiting for our program that is assigned for one year long. The total budget
for now will be $107,843.
Section 4: Summary
● It is better to evaluate the primary interventions of concussion to educate these
young football players and their parents and coaches about it. So, they will be
aware of the causes and symptoms of concussion and try to diagnose it earlier.
Preventing concussion in football games for young athletes who are 13 years old
and younger is the primary focus of this study and program.
