Paper Rubric
This class has taught a lot of material about the basic of business law, policy, and societal standards. As
future business professionals, there are no answers in a book. You or your team will be called upon to
answer these tough questions. There are no easy answers.
However, we can learn from other’s successes or mistakes. That is the purpose of your paper.
You are to identify three persons, entities, or organizations who have been the good, the bad, and the
toss up on the application of topics you learned from class. The idea is to analytically review the
positives, see the negatives, and identify an area that has a problem or success on the horizon.
The paper length is your choice. However, it would be difficult to reach an in depth review in less than
10 pages (double spaced), but 15 is likely a good amount.
Ideally, your three persons, entities, or organizations should be divided into three sections. At first part
of each section should identify the person, entity, or organization you have located. A brief background
including its general operations, the leaders, and the circumstances you are writing about. I want to be
able to have a full understanding of the background of the person/entity/organization. Do not be overly
simplistic. The devil of many business problems is in the details.
The second part should discuss the principles you are reviewing. References to in-class reading and
materials is a great idea, but not required. References to materials from non-class publications,
websites, and others is even better, provided it relates to anything we have worked on, discussed, or
you read about.. The reader (i.e. your instructor) should have a firm grasp on the principles and
concepts you have identified as being in play. Assume I am a freshman in the business department and
barely know anything you have learned in your business classes. Use sources and cite to them (though I
am not stickler for a particular style.) Make sure I understand, clearly and easily, what concepts you are
invoking, their rationale, and perhaps even why they are relevant in today’s society.
The third part is how those principles came into play and/or affected the outcome of the circumstances
for the person/entity/organization. Again, I want a firm grasp that you are able to apply the principles
you learned and show that you can identify them in the real world.
So, for example, in the 1980s, six adults and one 12-year-old girl died of cyanide poisoning in Chicago
after taking capsules of Extra Strength Tylenol. Realizing the positive value of corporate social
responsibility, Tylenol voluntarily recalled almost every bottle it manufactured. It also nearly
bankrupted the company. However, the company survived by placing the safety of its customers first.
For this paper, a discussion on the history and background of Tylenol would be a started, followed an indepth discussion on what is corporate social responsibility and its financial costs and benefits. Lastly, the
application of corporate social responsibility principles to show how successful Tylenol was in putting
people ahead of profits.
