Though “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and Shirley Jackson’s “The
Lottery” share similarities, it is the differences in the types of control, restriction
of freedom, and the dystopian protagonist that make “The Lottery” a more
effective example of a dystopia.
“Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut reveals the author’s concerns about a lack
of critical thinking and compulsory conformity through the actions of George,
Hazel, and the title character.

George
A. Above average intellect
1. Because of his potential ability to think critically, George was mentally
handicapped through technology as indicated by these words: “A buzzer
sounded in George’s head. His thoughts fled in panic, like bandits from a
burglar alarm” (Vonnegut 1).

A Comparison of Dystopian Societies in “Harrison Bergon” and “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”
Stories of dystopian societies always have one thing in common and that is the author explaining how the
world will potentially be in a future time. No one really knows how accurate the authors’ views really are and in all
reality, anything is possible. That fact has been proven time and again.
In the stories “Harrison Bergeron”
and “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”, the stories’ dystopian heroes are very different,
but both societies criticize intelligence and uniqueness, but even so “Harrison Bergeron” was a
better depiction of dystopian society because of extreme egalitarianism.
In “Harrison Bergeron”, the hero was a rebel because he wanted to change society. He wanted people to
live up to their full potential the government obstructed people with above average intelligence, such as Harrison’s
father George who had a “little mental handicap radio in his ear” (Vonnegut 1) in order to prevent him from thinking
intently.
In the article “The Politics of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron””, Darryl Hattenhauer
states that Vonnegut’s story is “an enactment of how absurd society would be if egalitarianism
were what America’s dominant culture thinks it is.” “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”
hero was a zero. The child was being punished in order for everyone to experience happiness.
“It is so thin there are no calves to its legs; its belly protrudes…It is naked. Its buttocks and thighs
are a mass of festered sores, as it sits in its own excrement continually” (Le Guin 4). According
to Rebecca Adams in the article “Narrative Voice and Unimaginability of the Utopian ‘Feminine’
in Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness and ‘The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.’”, the
child is a “graphically scapegoated victim–a brutally imprisoned idiot child–whose misery is the
condition upon which the entire happiness of the utopia is founded.” In a sense, though, the

other heroes of this story could be the people who walk away from the city that it finding
pleasure in another human being’s pain.
Intelligence was a crime in “Harrison Bergeron” and it was criticized in “The Ones Who Walk Away From
Omelas”.
Because of heavy weights to deter strength and a handicapper radio to prevent thinking,
the people in “Harrison Bergeron” “were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than
anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker
than anybody else” (Vonnegut 1). Vonnegut is saying that human beings are not (and will never
be equal) because of our unique differences. The only way to make people equal is to limit what
they were born with to the bare minimum. People who were intelligent had a mental
handicapper and “Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise
to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains” (Vonnegut 1). The
people in 2081 “were burdened with sashweights and bags of birdshot” (Vonnegut 1) in order for
everyone to have the same amount of strength and speed. It seems as though Vonnegut is trying
to show that literally making everyone equal would completely take away democracy. Also,
society would be extremely boring because everyone would be the same. Numbing people’s
minds with loud noises is not fair and is a punishment for those who were gifted with above
average intelligence and strength. When speaking of intelligence in “The Ones Who Walk Away From
Omelas”, Le Guin comments on intelligence by saying “The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by
pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil
interesting” (2). Le Guin is trying to convey that a person can be both intellectual and happy as the people are in
Omelas. The intellectual and empathetic, though, walk away after seeing the tortured child miserable. They leave
the city of Omelas in hopes of walking into a town that has happy people without the suffering of others, but in real
life that doesn’t seem to exist. The selfish continue being happy at the expense of the child’s misery.

“Harrison Bergeron” was a better depiction of dystopian society. While “The Ones Who
Walk Away From Omelas” is correct about a lot of societies’ happiness depending on the pain of
others, “Harrison Bergeron” was more correct because of the equality factor and rebellion in
order to get changes. In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”, the people “all understand
that their happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their
children, the wisdom of their scholars, the skill of their makers, even the abundance of their
harvest and the kindly weathers of their skies, depend wholly on this child’s abominable misery”
(Le Guin 4). In “Harrison Bergeron”, when George Harrison was talking to his wife Hazel, his
wife wanted him to take some of his lead balls out of his bag to give him strength and he said
“'”If I tried to get away with it,” said George, “then other people’d get away with it-and pretty
soon we’d be right back to the dark ages again, with everybody competing against everybody
else. You wouldn’t like that, would you?'” Because everyone’s equal by these outrageous
“equalizers”, most of the people are afraid to rebel because of how bad society was due to the
unique individuals who have advantages over the average population. George does not want to
rebel in order to keep society safe, and when one person does something outlandish, other people
tend to follow suit. The title character, Harrison Bergon, is brave enough to try to change
society. He first gets put into jail for it. When he escapes jail, he tries to become leader in order
to bring society back to the way it was. When he is trying to become Emperor with his chosen
Empress, “Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, came into the studio with a doublebarreled ten-gauge shotgun. She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before
they hit the floor” (Vonnegut 5). Some of the people who were initially watching were probably
inspired by Harrison Bergon due to his brave acts in order to try to benefit the majority but when

he was shot by the Handicapper General, their ideas were shot down along with Harrison and his
Empress.
In conclusion, “Harrison Bergon” is more accurate to a dystopian society because of
egalitarianism banning intelligence and uniqueness, and his hero is a more believable dystopian
hero. In the story “Harrison Bergon”, equalizing contraptions were required in order to keep
everyone at the average intelligence and strength levels. In “The Ones Who Walk Away From
Omelas”, the author states that intellectualism causes sadness and evil. The hero in “Harrison
Bergon” was the title character, and eventually got shot for his actions. In this way, he was a
typical dystopian character under Bureaucratic control. The hero in “The Ones Who Walk Away
From Omelas” was the tortured child since his misery allowed the the rest of Omelas to be
happy. The other heroes were the people who rebelled by walking away from a city that tortures
others for their own selfish pleasure.
