INTRODUCTION
American is an immigrant country that many people would like to come. As we can see
at college, there are many international students made an important decision of come to
America from other countries because they want to attend a famous university in the
world and receive a valuable diploma in order to find their dream careers. However,
another important and difficult decision that we have to make is our career paths. In order
to make our personal life more successful, we have to understand ourselves, and also
know what kinds of job we want to take because I believe doing what we like to do is the
greatest thing in our lives. Therefore, the purpose of this report is to find out which
company is the best for my expectation, which includes the size of the company, location,
and opportunities.
There are two companies I would like to choose in my research, Tesla and Apple. Tesla is
America motor company that produces electronic vehicles; it is also an energy storage
and solar panel company that provides solar energy in our homes. Apple is an American
multinational company that produces electronic products, such as smart phone and
computer. This report will analysis and compare many parts of the two companies, which
includes their background information, benefits, products and services, customer
feedbacks and SWOT analysis. All the information will be collected by using online
resources, for example, the companies’ main websites, secondary websites, and the San
Jose State University’s electronic databases. In the end, I will conclude both companies
and find out which company is the best for my expectation.
The Expectation of Company
The world community is changing every day, a perfect corporation should have unlimited
potential ability to create more products and services in the future and also the leader of
the company has to have foresight to lead his/her employees live in this society. If a
company doesn’t have ability to see the future world, then those employees would not
have chance to increase their knowledge and positions. In order to make our lives
successful, we should understand a company’s culture and background before accepting
this job. Based on the culture and background, we can see how the company is developed,
organized and managed.
In addition, the company should always follow the win-win situation whether facing with
employees or dealing with other companies because it can increase more profits and
opportunities for the company. When the company is facing employees, they should
provide additional benefits because it can increase the level of happiness. As result,
employees will study hard and help the company gain more and more. On the other hand,
when the company is dealing with another company by using win-win situation, they can
Page 3 of 11
all make profits, and they will have high chance of making business again. In the end,
company like to care themselves, they should also care about others because it will have
more opportunities in the future.
COMPANY 1: TESLA
BACKGROUND
Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Eerhard was bored
in Kensington, California, and he studied computer engineering as a bachelor’s degree
and electrical engineering as a master’s degree in University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Tarpenning studied computer science in the University of California,
Berkeley. Their common goal is to let people drive electric vehicles instead of gasoline
vehicles because it produces zero-emission into the air. In order to achieve their goal,
they put many high technology into the vehicles, which makes the vehicle high quality,
faster speed and easy to drive. In addition, everything in the car is electronic; people can
do whatever they want to do in the car by setting the self-driving model. In 2008, the
Tesla Motors released their first car, and the test showed that the car can run 245 miles
per charge, and less than 4 seconds from 0 to 60 miles. Now, all the vehicles from Tesla
are produced in its Fremont factory in California. Based on company’s mission, “Tesla
continues to make products accessible and affordable to more and more people,
ultimately accelerating the advent of clean transport and clean energy production. electric
cars, batteries, and renewable energy generation and storage already exists independently,
but when combined, they become even more powerful – that’s the future we want.”
(Tesla, n.d.)
PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
The company’s products can be divided into two categories: Autos and Energy. In the
auto categories, Tesla has three different car models, which are Model S, Model X, and
Model 3. Basically, the Model S can be a luxury car in the company; it has very high
technology, which includes adaptive lighting system, bio-weapon defense mode, and also
full self-driving hardware. By using the self-driving hardware, people do not need to push
and touch anything in the car, the car just drive by itself. Model X is very similar to the
Model S; the only difference is that the Model X is a SUV, so it’s much bigger than the
Model S. Model 3 is the smaller one; it just came out few months ago. In addition, in the
energy categories, Tesla provides home power energy, which can be produced by the
Solar Panels, and the Powerwall. Those products can save so much more energy that we
use at home. Because the energy is produced by the unlimited resources, so our world is
going to become green and green.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
When Tesla’s vehicle came out few years ago, customers were not satisfaction with this
car because it had so many problems, which involved the drivetrain, power equipment,
charging equipment, giant iPad-like center console, and body and sunroof squeaks, rattles,
and leaks. But the time allowed them to change their services and products. “Tesla’s
Model S earned a buy recommendation from Consumer Reports earlier this year, after its
reliability rating improved.” (Tcechcrunch) Ninety-one percents of Tesla drivers would
love to buy Tesla again in the future, which gives a very positive feedback to the society.
SWOT ANALYSIS
One of the most main strengths is their “Unique Position in the Auto Market.” (Valueline)
As we know, Tesla is not a common auto company; they produce high charging range
and high speed electronic vehicles, which is very different than other companies that only
provide some of the hybrid and electronic cars. Although they locate their market on the
luxury level, the price of the vehicles is less than other brands. However, they are trying
to change the idea of the way people drive, and telling the world what the future looks
like.
The most affective weakness is that the company has very high debt load in their
financial statements. “Tesla had nearly $2.5 billion of long-term debt and capital leases
on its balance sheets, or roughly 72% of total capital, and 1.4 billion of cash on hand.”
(Valueline) This could cause the company would not have enough money to continue
grow in the future because they might decrease the investments and capital expenses,
which will cause the company unable to pay back the debt.
The opportunity that the company has is that they might decrease the price of vehicle in
the future. Once the market is getting mature, a lot people would love to buy a electronic
vehicle because it can reduce their spending on gasoline, and also protect our
environment. “The company’s ability to lower costs and support economies of scale
while realizing greater efficiencies in production and distribution should help to bring
down unit costs and improve the bottom line in the coming quarters.” (Valueline)
The threats that they have are competition. As we can see, people are driving many kinds
of electronic vehicles in our environment. Some of their cars are sold from BMW,
NISSAN, and VOLKSWAGEN, so how to compete with other companies is the main
question for Tesla. “While other high-end auto companies have dabbled in fully electric,
vehicles, none have really made any significant push to incorporate them into their
business.” (Valueline)

COMPANY II: APPLE
BACKGROUND
Apple Inc is founded in April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Steve Jobs
went to Reed College in Portland for two years, and Steve Wozniak went to University of
California, Berkeley. They work together in the late 1970’s because they produced the
Apple II computer. Later on, they Steve Jobs became CEO, and tried to create more
products such as Ipod, for music, and Iphone, for communication. And now, Steve Jobs
pasted way, but his company is still growing. Based on the main website, “Our goal, in a
nutshell, is to obtain stellar products and services within tight timeframes, at a cost that
represents the best possible value to our customers and shareholders.” (Apple)
PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
In the 20th Century, Apple’s main products are computers. Now there are so many kinds
of products are available to us. The products can be categorized into six different types.
Mac is computer; there are many kinds of computers, such as Macbook, Mcbook Air,
Macbook Pro, and iMac. People would like to buy computers from Apple because they
have their own Apple System, and some Applications are very easy to use. Ipad is tablet
computer, and it’s very easy to carry out. It includes iPad Pro, iPad, and iPad mini4.
Iphone is smart phone, it updates every year. The newest one is iPhone 8, and iPhone X is
coming this month. But you still can get iPhone 7, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE in the market.
Apple watch are includes Series 3, Nike +, Hermes, Edition and Series 1. In addition,
Apple also provides services to their customer, for example, Apple TV, people can buy
their TV program and watch many channels at home. Apple Music, provides unlimited
songs, so people can enjoy in their lives.
CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
According to the ACSI survey for the smart phones, the iPhone SE and iPhone 7 are the
highest number in 2017. IPhone SE is 87 and iPhone 7 is 86. And also the ACSI for the
personal computer, Apple is also the high in 2015 and 2016, both years are 84. Based on
the number, we can see people are like to use Apple than other brands because its quality
and reliability. As result, Apple has become the most popular company in the electronic
product market.
SWOT ANALYSIS
The company has very strong cash flow because we can see that in 2012, the company
has $121.251 billion cash available, and $146.761 billion for 2013, $155.239 for the 2014,
and $205.666 for the 2015. The number is getting larger and larger, which means the
company has ability to keep growing in the future. “Apple’s revenue grew on average by
Page 6 of 11
16.44% from 2012 to 2015. During the same period, the company’s profit grew by
27.94%. This is a very successful growth, considering the company’s huge size and its
total revenues, which reached US$223 billion in 2015.” (Strategic Management Insight)
As we can see, most people like to buy smart phones and computers from Apple
Company, so the company likes to upgrade their products every year. This can be the
weakness for the company because they would increase their profit only on those two
products. “Although, these product lines have been the growth drivers for the company,
any future decline in the growth rates could impact the company’s performance.”
(SJLIBRARY)
“The global smart phone market has been growing robustly over the few years and is
expected to grow consistently in the coming year.”(SJLIBRARY) The world economy is
improving together; many countries are going to become developed countries from
developing countries. Same as smart phone, more and more people will have chance to
buy smart phone, no matter where you are. The company has the chance to cover their
products the entire world because it is the most popular brand in the world.
The currency exchange is one of the threats that the company has. Because the currency
changes every day, so the profit that U.S. earned will be different than outside of U.S.
according to the record, “The company earns over 65% of its revenue outside of the U.S.
(STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT INSIGHT)

Conclusion
TESLA
Based on the research of Tesla Company, I can see it is a very great option to work in the
company. Because of the company is new, it has so many opportunities to develop in the
future. And also, their core goal is to change people’s driving way, which change to
electronic to gasoline, will decrease the carbon dioxide release into the atmosphere. In
addition, the location is very close to where I am, and it also has opportunity to work in
the company outside of U.S.
APPLE
I can imagine it is so much fun to work at Apple. People who work there are receiving
new technology every day; it is the best place to make employees satisfaction during the
working. Their goal is to provide the best products and services to their customers, so the
customer must be the most important group in their hearts. I believe they have already
achieved the win-win situation because customers are happy with their products, and they
make profits on it.
FINAL DECISION
According to the information I found on these two companies. I believe that working for
either company could be satisfaction in my career life. Both companies are technology
companies, which are related to the future market. And also, both companies are selling
their products oversea. As a foreigner, I would love to see people are using new
technology and driving clean vehicle during their lives.
NEXT STEPS
According to the report, I found out that those two companies are the best place to work
in my life. But now it is time to increase my personal ability in order to be hired from the
company. First of all, I will try to learn as much as possible at college, and get higher
grade on each course. And also, spend more time on finance and account major courses,
and try to get the CPA and CFA licenses as soon as possible. Moreover, I will try to find
internship in order to learn more experience; it will help my future career as well. Even
more, I will continue working on my resume, when it is time to turning in, I will be fully
prepared.
