All of these articles involve insider trading or some form of white collar crime. It is interesting to
see people like Martha Stewart get arrested and jailed for a crime like insider trading. There has
been a huge crack down on white collar crime in the recent years but is it enough? As stated in
the article “Notes from a Little Fish”, only the smaller guys who aren’t as fast or as smart get
caught. I’m sure there are many no name people who make millions on insider trading every year
but are never caught. Lawyers would rather go after people like Martha Stewart for saving a
$40,000 loss because she’s a big name and more eye catching.
I personally think that crimes such as insider trading are impossible to stop. The entire stock
market and buying/selling stock is based on the idea that you know more about the stock you are
buying/selling then the person buying/selling to you does. This means that people will always be
trying to get extra information or an other type of advantage over other investors. If that
information comes from a high level executive or a “hush-hush discussion in the elevator” it is
very hard to not take advantage of. Insider trading and other white collar crime may be lessened
with the fear of fines and jail time but the big fish will always get away.
The Wells Fargo article also brings up some interesting points regarding who to target when
corporate fraud is uncovered. The executives or the company. If the company is targeted then the
fine must be large enough to be impactful but not so large that it forces the company out of
business. The fine also cannot be so small that the effects are negligible. White collar crime in
general is very interesting and should be handled in a way that does not destroy business and
innovation but also disciplines unethical and criminal behavior.
