Catalog Entry
An exhibition catalog is published along with an exhibit at a museum or gallery. It includes a list
of images in the show, a biography of the artist, and an interpretation of the show’s theme.
Assignment:
Choose an artist. Choose 10 images for your show that will be on display at a museum. You
will create a name for the show and describe the theme of the show. Be sure to include how
the images relate to one another. 6-7 pages (not including the images and labels).
This assignment is designed to assess your ability to collect and synthesize information around
a particular theme. Exhibition catalogues are published in conjunction with curated shows in art
museums. Catalogues include images of the works in the exhibition. The reproduced images
are accompanied by labels with the work’s factual data and a short formal description of the
work along with a brief scholarly interpretation. Sometimes other relevant works not in the
exhibition are included in these essays for comparison.
PART 1
Theme, Labels and PPT
This portion must include:
• A typed paragraph articulating the theme of your exhibition on one page
• Images and data for 10 works that will be essential for your exhibition; each image and data
label must be on its own page or slide
• Images must be in color, and of good quality
• Data labels must follow the guidelines of the College Art Association:
Artist, Title (in italics), date, medium, dimensions in inches
Label Example: 3 Sandro Botticelli, Primavera, ca. 1482, tempera on panel, 6 ft. 8 in. x 10 ft. 4
in. (2.03 x 3.15 m). Galleria degli, Uffizi, Florence.
PART 2
Catalogue Entry
The catalogue entry is a formal description and interpretation of one of the works included in
your exhibition. Explain the theme of your exhibition and articulate how the other 9 works fit
that theme. In other words, it provides an introduction for the reader to understand the logic
and rationale behind your exhibition, and more importantly, the significance of the works
chosen.
A successful entry will:
• Be 3 pages, typed in 12 pt. Times New Roman
• Organized in logical paragraphs, beginning with a thesis statement indicating how the works
relate to your exhibition theme.
• Include a works cited of relevant sources, in MLA style – Sources must include at least 2
books and 2 journal articles.
PART 3
Biography of Artist and Works Cited
The biography should not be exhaustive, but represent the life of the artist during his/her
working period. When did the artist start painting? How was s/he educated? What were his
motivations, influences, muse?
The biography will:
• Be 2 pages, typed in 12 pt. Times New Roman
• Explain the connection between the works you have chosen, the theme, and the artist’s life how do they all relate to each other?
• Include a works cited of relevant sources, in MLA style
