1. Describe DDT and summarize the history of the use and banning of DDT, including actions
taken by the U.S. government. State the major reasons for spraying with DDT and for
banning it. State three or more ways science has played a role in the controversy.

in killing insects. It was discovered in 1874 and used for controlling malaria and typhus. It was very successful in
controlling these diseases. In 1945 it became available in the United States and was promoted as a pesticide
However, in the 1950’s the government began tightening bans on the use of DDT. There were concerns of the
effects of DDT on people and the environment In 1962 Rachel Carson wrote a book “Silent Spring” that warned
of the environmental impacts of DDT, The book claimed that DDT and other pesticides had been shown to cause
cancer and that the agricultural use was a threat to wildlife, particularly birds.
