“A commentary is a genre of writing that uses analysis and interpretation to find patterns of
meaning in events, trends, and ideas. The purpose of a commentary is not simply to report on
things but to give readers a way to make sense of them” (CTW 288).
For this assignment you will select a social issue from the class generated list (Bb Post #7) that you find
interesting. You will write a well-informed, well-researched commentary on your topic that includes not
only your personal experience or viewpoint, but also frames the issue, or informs your reader as to what
others are saying about your chosen topic. You may NOT write about abortion, the death
penalty/capital punishment, or the legalization of drugs (particularly marijuana) as those are topics
often covered at the High School Level.
It is important to understand that a commentary is a comment on, or response to, what others
are already saying about an issue. If you were to simply write about your support for or
criticism of the War in Afghanistan, you would probably end up writing a rant rather than a
commentary. If you were to write about the President’s revised plan for the presence of
American troops in Afghanistan, what others are saying about that revised plan, and add your
perspective to the conversation, you would be writing a commentary.
A commentary tries to do more than simply agree or disagree with what others are saying—a
commentary would try to point out ideas or perspectives that others have not noticed. A
commentary isn’t just a loose collection of observations, however; it will have a clearly stated
thesis. In other ways, the genre is pretty flexible: midlevel or formal style, top-down or
culminating organization, a mixture of personal experience and use of sources. Commentaries
will occasionally address readers very directly if they are trying to get the attention of a
particular group of people.
Length: You are expected to write 6 full pages of text (standard margins & font, double-spaced),
and integrate at least 5 strong sources into the paper. Papers that don’t meet these minimum
requirements will earn a “C” grade at best.
