1. Individual vs Social Identity
Context
How much awareness do you have about the ways you perceive and present yourself? Here is a
simple exercise for self-reflection that might provide some interesting insights.
Description
Take a piece of blank paper and fold it in half by folding the top half down. Then fold it in half
again, so that when you open it and hold it sideways, you have four columns. In the first column,
list traits that describe yourself, personality attributes, behaviors, or roles with which you
identify. Then in the next three columns, consider different social contexts in which you find
yourself (for instance, home, work, in a group or activity in which you frequently participate). In
each of these columns, list attributes or descriptors you would use to describe your traits or
behavior.
In a paragraph or two, explain observations, inferences, and conclusions you draw from this
activity about self in context in the Forum. You may consider different perceptions of yourself in
context, evaluations of self-esteem in different contexts compared to global self-esteem, how
your sense of self-efficacy manifests in different contexts, or you may see development through
your autobiographical memory within a particular context. How would you apply social identity
theory to your results?
2. The Internet and Self Presentation
Context
The digital age is re-configuring work, social relationships, education, and interpersonal
communication. Often in the absence of video and audio communication, the intentions behind
email and text messages are misinterpreted. Introverts find it easier to self-disclose in the relative
anonymity that Internet communication provides.
Description
Think of the various modalities of Internet exchanges in which you participate in your
professional, personal, and family life. Describe with us the different social media worlds in
which you take part (you may be specific or general based on your desire for privacy). What
constructs related to self-presentation enter in? Are there ethical or social cues and standards you
need to remember in your self-presentation? Describe some observations about your selfpresentation in two or three paragraphs.
