Solved by verified expert:We have identified several different themes and images with respect to media representations of gender, race and class. Based on the videos/clips, powerpoints, etc. describe how gender, race, class are depicted in the media. Using specific character, TV show, film, music video/musician, etc. please discuss how race, class and gender are represented in your choice. Please make sure to pick something different than those who have responded before you. Don’t forget to respond to at least one other student post and to incorporate at least two course materials in your posts. Don’t forget your post must be between 450 words in length total ( 300 word original post and 150 word response post). The post should focus on the questions asked and use concrete examples to illustrate the points you wish to make. Don’t forget to respond to another student! Do incorporate at least two course materials in your posts. an example of the discussion I chose the movie She’s the Man to discuss Gender, Race and Class. This movie is about a girl (Viola Johnson) who disguises as her brother (Sebastian Johnson) so she can play on the men’s soccer team at her brothers elite boarding school. The first thing that stands out to me is how she had to disguise herself as a man to be able to even play on the men’s soccer team. Later on in the movie when everyone found out that Viola was a woman and not her brother everyone in the movie like coaches and parents were all shocked, disgusted and angered. The reactions to Viola playing just as good as the men on the team should not have been as dramatic as they were because truly when you have talent it shouldn’t matter if you are a man or woman. This reminds me of the article Gender-Ideas, Interactions, and Institutions. In this article authors Wade and Ferree say, “The truth is that our physical traits like height, hairiness, shape, strength, agility, flexibility and bone structure overlap far more than they diverge.” (Wade, Ferree pg.22) Although this is the truth, media wants society to believe that men and women don’t belong in the same leagues. The next thing that stood out to me is the front cover of the film. There is a picture of all the main characters and they are all white. This makes me realize not only was the director of the movie racist when choosing the cast but, also shows how media portrays upper and lower class related to race. The movie takes place at an elite private boarding school and by casting all white main characters media depicts that whites are more upper class than any other race. This reminds me of the article Lets Talk: Dorothy Dandridge and Marilyn Monroe because Marilyn Monroe was white and dripping in diamonds and is a commonly known figure (upper class) compared to Dorothy Dandridge.
