prompts (for a total of 4-6 pages). For prompts 4-6, you will need an outside source.

questions.

research. Create a works cited page (MLA format) or reference page (APA format) at
the end of the paper.

Name an instance where you stereotyped someone else but your generalizations
were proven wrong.
2) How do you respond when your find yourself in a culture (or co-culture) different
from your own? Discuss a specific example

Prompt Two
1) The book talks about social media, self-concept, public vs private selves, and
impression management. To answer this week’s question, discuss the role social
media plays in connection to these concepts. Use your own social media
experiences as a guide. Answer the following questions.
a) What is your most frequently used social media platform(s)? Limit one to
three platforms. Do you have a “social media identity” and a “real-life identity”
and how are the two different?

social media? Why do you choose your level of disclosure? Does your level
of disclosure differ depending on the social media platform? If so, why is there
a difference?
c) Do you compare yourself to your friends on social media? If any, what
comparisons are you making? If not, how do you resist the urge to make
those comparisons?

social media changes how we communicate with others or our perceptions of
others on social media or related topics. (Do not do this assignment with a
parent or boss)
Go on a technology fast for three days with one or two people in your life. No e-mail,
Facebook, Twitter, or texting. You may call or visit each other in person. If possible, do
not tell the person your intentions. Simply change your mode of communication with
them. Answer the following questions:
1. How did your communication change when you altered your usual mode of
technologically mediated communication?
2. What was the other person’s reaction to the change in communication? Positive?
Negative? Explain.
3. Did you feel more satisfied or dissatisfied with the relationship based on the
increased face-to-face or phone interaction? Why?
4. Do you believe you will permanently change the way you communicate with this
person? Why or why not?
Prompt 4
Lisa Braithwaite is a public-speaking coach from Santa Barbara, California, interviewed by the
Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune as an expert in her craft. Braithwaite’s blog, “Speak
Schmeak” covers all aspects of the public speaking process, though much of her content also

1. Monitor your conversations for one to two days and try to catch any “crutch phrases” that you
use. Ask others to help you as you speak with them. What do you say repetitively?
2. Why do you believe you use the “crutch phrase” that you do? Do you perceive your “crutch
phrase” impacting your ability to clearly communicate? How does using this phrase impact the
level of power in your language?
3. Devise up to three strategies that you can use to, as Braithwaite puts it, “eradicate your
crutch phrase.”
Prompt 5
Tim Tyrell-Smith, marketing coach and career strategist, writes for US News & World Report’s
career blog as well as his own blog, http://www.timsstrategy.com. Read his piece on the top ten
interview mistakes to avoid and select one other blog post about interviewing. Then, answer the

http://timsstrategy.com/the-first-5-minutes-how-to-kick-off-a-successful-interview

interviews. Select two nonverbal mistakes from the list and discuss the underlying message that
an employer might receive from a candidate making these errors.
2. Do you believe that you could commit any of these nonverbal mistakes in interviews? Which
ones?
3. Based on the additional blog post that you selected, what strategies can you take to avoid
nonverbal mistakes when you interview? What new nonverbal strategies will you use in job
interviews?
4. What nonverbal mistakes would you add to Tyrell-Smith’s list?
Prompt 6
Listening does not only happen face-to-face, but also when we respond to another person in
writing. Use your favorite social media outlet (Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or a text discussion)
and follow a couple of conversations. The conversations can be yours or interactions that others
are having. Research and incorporate an article regarding social media conversations,
disclosure online or related topic. Answer the following questions.
1. How is the listening process (hearing through responding) noted in the text impacted by
conversations held via social media?
2. Copy an example of an original comment and another person’s response to the comment.
What did the respondent say to indicate that they “heard” the other person’s message?
3. Copy an example of an original comment and response where you perceived that the
other person wasn’t “listening” to what the original poster said. What did the respondent say to
make you believe that the original poster was not heard?
4. Do you feel that other people are listening to you when you interact with them via social
