Critical Thinking – “Convince Me” Prompt
This assignment, as the name implies, is all about persuading others to your point of view. Your
job is to pick a topic – it can be anything: that students should forgo partying to study (or that
they should forgo studying to party!), that people should vote libertarian, that global warming is
human caused, that late term abortions ought to be illegal, that the Eagles will win the
Superbowl, that Saving Private Ryan should have won best picture in 1998, whatever you’d like
– and convince others to hold your point of view. Of course the view really doesn’t have to be
your own – you’re welcome to simply play devil’s advocate just to think through a point of view
that is not your own (you ought to be doing that anyway!).
There is a great deal of leeway as to how you complete the assignment. Be creative! You can
simply write a short essay, but you can also post a video or use any media at your disposal. If
you’re using text, there must be a minimum of 5 robust paragraphs. If you’re using audio or
video, it should be between 3 to 5 minutes. However, whatever form your persuasive argument
takes, you must be able to post it (or a link) on Canvas on the discussion board. Text is easy in
this regard, but there’s a lot of rhetorical tools you’re giving up by limiting yourself to text.
Obviously whatever form your assignment takes, the work must be original – it has to be your
own.
The job of your peers is to critique your argument and offer constructive criticism in the
comments – to tell the arguer what worked, what didn’t, and why. Were you convinced? Why
or why not?
You’re welcome to use anything that we’ve used throughout the course, but you have to use each
of the three modes of rhetoric: ethos, logos, and pathos. You’re encouraged to deploy logical
argumentation (disjunctive syllogism, dilemma, etc.) of course, and you’re welcome to employ
fallacies if you’d like. As we discussed, clever use of fallacies can actually be persuasive, or at
least get people to think or do what you want through manipulation. The caveat is that if you
don’t do it well, your peers are likely to call you on it and that could cost you points.
You’ll be graded foremost on how well you deploy the three modes of rhetoric (ethos, logos, and
pathos) and whether your logic is sound, but also partly on how convincing you are to your
peers. This is something to think about when you consider what topic you pick, what position
you take, how you frame your argument, your use of fallacies, and so on. For example, if you
take an extreme position on a topic – so extreme that you can’t appeal to the beliefs and values of
your peers – then you’re probably going to be less persuasive. The assignment is intentionally
open ended – show us what you’ve learned!
The finished assignment must be posted and you must have responded to two of your peers
by 11:59 pm on December 9th. E-mail me if you have questions!
