The two type of styles were Impressionist and Expressionism. Both of these styles moved away from tonal harmonies, scales and melodies (Clark, Alan N.,et al. page 228) .The impressionist style isn’t programmatic it doesn’t truly follow a story line. Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel were the two major composers of the impressionist style. Maurice Ravel was famous for Bolero. It was a Spanish dance song.Expressionism composers took away harmony and tonal melody. It wasn’t an expression of romance but more so of a harsh emotion. Expressionism is based on the movement of chords. Which gives the music an none melodic tone. The composer of that time was Arnold Schoenburg who compose Five Orchestral piece.POST 2:Seeing how the twentieth century was a time of great upheaval in music it changed many different fundamentals of music which affected the developments in musical styles and genres. You can tell that composers wanted the audience to portray music in new ways. Melodies, harmonies, textures and rhythms changed during this period. There were more use of synthesizers that used electronics to create different sounds, more dissonance in harmonies, several different beats within a meter and so on.Two different styles that I enjoyed throughout reading the music of this time period was Primitivism and Impressionism. In an impressionism, which is a musical composed based on the composer’s impression of an object, concept, or event. The style included the use of chromaticism, whole-tone scales and chords, exotic scales, new chord progressions, and more complex rhythms. Two major composers of this style was Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. A major composition written by Maurice Ravel was Daphnis and Chloe. Just like the definition, this style tries to draw more of a picture for you like a type of art picture just like in Maurice’s composition. I like how the different instruments come together to each make a sound of an event or thing and they create different melodies. The melody always reaches a high climax giving you a sense of what is happening but then slowly dies down every time. This musical composition was a through-composed form because none of the sections repeated.On the other hand, primitivism is a musical movement that arrived as a reaction against musical impressionism and focused on the use of strong rhythmic pulse, distinct musical ideas, and a tonality formed on one central tone as a unifying factor instead of a central key or chord progression. The major composer of this style is Igor Stravinsky and one of his famous compositions was The Rite of Spring. I loved the choreography of this composition and how the dancers in the back helped make out the sound in this piece. I hear a lot of tension and dramatic formations just like in the 19th century. The tempo becomes faster closer to the end and the scale
