Question 1
1.The text indicates that both writing and speaking are important skills. Explain when each is the most
effective when attempting to increase channel richness? (Hint: Review Choice of Communication
Channel section in the chapter)

RE: Question 1
Written communication is most effective when trying to relay a
complex and lengthy message, but it can also be highly effective if a
short message needs to be relayed. For instance, if you need to let
someone know a quick two sentence message it would be easier to
quickly text them than to call them on the phone.
Oral communication is effective when you need to see or hear your
receiver’s reaction. For instance, if you were performing a focus
group you would not want to do it as a written survey with no
physical or oral reaction gage on the group.

Question 2
2. Let’s take your answer a step further. What are the most effective methods of communication when
attempting to achieve specific results? For example, when should you use written communication vs. a
phone call? When should you send a letter? When is oral communication more effective? (Hint: these
answers are in the Choosing Communication Methods section in the chapter).

RE: Question 2
COLLAP SE
Like mentioned previously, the choice of channel depends on whether the message is
routine or not (routine messages tend to be more straightforward and minimal ambiguity
while nonroutine messages are complicated with potential for misunderstanding). So in my
opinion, the most effective methods of communication when attempting to achieve specific
results depend on what “result” you are looking for (like presenting an idea to the team or
trying to market that idea, etc.)
If you are trying to gauge the receiver’s receptivity, you should go for oral communication
like meetings, videoconferencing and conference calling, and telephone. An example would
be trying to market a new idea to a customer because you want to see his/her reaction to
your proposal.
Written communication is usually preferred for lengthy and complex discussions and some
examples are letters, PowerPoint, e-mail, instant/text messaging, social media websites,
apps, and blogs. Though there is limitation in emotional expression, it is great when you
want information to be tangible, verifiable, and “on the record”.

3. Review the statistics on page 361. How do you feel about the related office practices involved in these
statistics? Are the behaviors described appropriate in the workplace? Explain your answer.

RE: Question 3
I agree that texting or emailing in meeting is innappropriate. It is
disrespectful to yor other employees. It can be distracting for the
other people and takes the focus off what needs to be completed and
sends a bad message about yourself. Unless its very important and
crucial I think texting and emailing should be to the bare minimum
in the workplace if its not about work. You are there to do a job and
complete it to the best of your ability.
