Method For The Tree-Point Beam Loading Test
The three point bending flexural test provides values for the modulus of
elasticity in bending displaystyle Ef, flexural stress display style sigma,
flexural strain display style epsilon and the flexural stress-strain
response of the material. The main advantage of a three-point flexural
test is the ease of the specimen preparation and testing.
THREE-POINT TEST
The highest or maximum bend stress occurs under the loading anvil in
three-point flexural bend tests. In four point bend tests, the maximum
flexural stress is spread over the section of the beam between loading
points. Also, a three-point test best applies where the material is
homogeneous, such as plastic materials. A four point test tends to be the
best choice if the material is not homogeneous, such as composites or
wood.
The stress concentration of a three-point test is small and concentrated
under the center of the loading point, whereas the stress concentration of
a four point test is over a larger region, avoiding premature failure.
HOW TO PREPARE STEEL BAR SURFACES FOR STRAIN GAGE
ATTACHMENT
The purpose of surface preparation is to develop a chemically clean surface
having a roughness appropriate to the gage installation requirements, a
surface alkalinity corresponding to a pH of 7 or so, and visible gage layout lines
for locating and orienting the strain gage. It is toward this purpose that the
operations described here are directed. As noted earlier, cleanliness is vital
throughout the surface preparation process. It is also important to guard
against recontamination of a once-cleaned surface. Following are several
examples of surface recontamination to be avoided
STEPS FOR SURFACE PREPARATION
1- Touching the cleaned surface with the fingers.
2- Wiping back and forth with a gauze sponge, or reusing a once-used surface of the
sponge (or of a cotton swab).
3- Dragging contaminants into the cleaned area from the uncleaned boundary of that
area.
4- Allowing a cleaning solution to evaporate on the surface.
5- Allowing a cleaned surface to sit for more than a few minutes before gage installation,
or allowing a partially prepared surface to sit between steps in the cleaning
procedure.
