Data collecting on Australia
Geographic / historical characteristics
Australia as a country is located in the Southern Hemisphere in between
the South Pacific and Indian oceans as the smallest continent but as the sixth
largest country by land area globally. It comes after Russia, Canada, China,
USA and Brazil with a land area of 7.682 million square kilometers.
Concerning population, Australia currently has around 24 million people, which
in the global numbers are a lower population density given its vast area
(Leamer, & Storper, 2014). That is an equivalent of every two people per
square kilometer; the land is almost an equal of the U.S. but is 50% greater
than Europe and thirty-two times bigger than the United Kingdom.
As an economy, it is said to have got a diverse culture given the mixture
of its population. The ratio of the indigenous people, up to the third generation,
to those born outside Australia is four to one. Currently, this mix has around
two hundred and seventy ethnic groups. The cultural landscape has fluctuated
due to the immigration cases that commenced towards the end of the 20th
Century in addition to the constant refugees’ inflow from Balkans. The official
language is English; however, several other Aboriginal languages are being
used in the country. Since the 19th Century, history shows that the Australian
population widely professed Christianity; with a quarter being Roman Catholics,
one-fifth Anglicans as other fraction covered Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and
other few Protestant denominations.
Historically, Australia has performed well over time, and there is evidence
in its level of development and advancement above the prospected margins.
The music industry currently has grown given its incorporation of a diverse
culture base and embrace of technology. The real estate investment is yet
another area that has proved successful with investors anticipating a growth
ranging from 6.50% to 8.00% (Leamer, & Storper, 2014). The same
experience is evident in the investor’s’ mandate as observed in 2016 where a
rightward shift occurs in capital movement given the optimistic market
rudiments. The official public holidays in this country include; New Year on
January 1st, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac, Christmas, and Boxing
Days. However, some holidays celebrations are at individual level, and they
are either declared a state or territory government levels, for example, Queen’s
Birthday and the Labor Day.
Political characteristics
The country is operating under a federal political system that embraces
democracy, where there exist six states that operate as sovereign entities. The
country is governed by a well-revised constitution as adopted from the United
Kingdom. The parliament, however, enacts laws that are national bound to
protect all its citizens. Employers are not allowed in any way to discriminate;
the employment contract must consider the minimum statutory terms as on the
Fair Work Act, Freedom of Information Act 1982 and Privacy Act of 1988
(Hatfield-Dodds et al, 2015). The government is further having sound policies
under its constitution that ensure comprehensive implementation of an income
tax that would enhance equity in the economy. Further acts of the law are also
there to make sure that the economic welfare is well balanced by ensuring the
unemployment and inflation rates are kept at single digits and maintained as
low as possible. Comprehensive policies are further put in place to enhance
trade within, and beyond the Australian borders, this targets stability in
domestic industries as well strengthening the base for export and international
trade as a whole.
Economic characteristics
Austria has widely employed the use of a free market system, which has
seen it through major growth. Currently, it falls among the top five most
developing economies of the world with trade, manufacturing, finance, and
services being its key pillars. The economy heads to an optimal development
stage given its fast rates in technology that has seen it through reduced
inflation levels, controlled unemployment rates and natural level of balance of
trade (Watts, 2015). The price of commodities exported is valued at $ 184.3
billion while its imports records stand at $ 203.1 billion; which is a good
measure, indicating that the economy is earning more from export than how it
spends on imports. The potential workforce is about 12.63 million that
significantly contributes to the economic development with a complementing
unemployment rate of 5.8%. Unemployment is down by 0.3% as compared to
the 2015 records, and conversely, the inflation rate is 1.3% as compared to 1.5%
figure for 2015 (Watts, 2015). The domestic resources that earn export are
gold, coal, meat, wool, wheat, alumina and iron ore among others. It has got a
gross national saving rate of 21.8% of GDP which is below the rates in the last
two financial years. The service sector is the greatest contributor to economic
growth with 68.2%, then the industry at 28.2% and finally the agricultural
sector that has 3.6%.
Education characteristics
The schooling system in this country provides Primary, Secondary and
Tertiary levels in the area. The school education that runs across Australia is
the same with some few fluctuations at the state and territory levels. In primary
the system acknowledges six to seven years, secondary it is a period of three
to four years while in the tertiary level it is supposed to take two years. The
basic literacy level is considered to be very high since the government has put
it mandatory for the generation between the age of six and fifteen (Wong,
2016). The foreign language is minimal given the traditional statistics, and the
government has tried since the 1980s to promote their development. The
federal government is also responsible for higher education learning that it fully
finances while supplementing the state’s’ systems. It enacts the education
policies that are operational in the entire country.
Health characteristics
Medicare is Australia’s universal health care system. What Medicare does is
subside most medical costs in Australia for all Australian citizens and
permanent residents. This was started in 1975 and has been very helpful for
Australia. Australia has the third and seventh highest life expectancy of males
and females in the world.
Infra / supper structure characteristics
Australia’s infrastructure plan provides a positive reform and investment
roadmap for Australia. The plan sets out the infrastructure challenges and
opportunities Australia faces over the next 15 years and the solutions required
to drive productivity growth, maintain and enhance our standard of living, and
ensures our cities remain world class. If the plan is delivered, Australia can
expect more affordable, innovative and competitive energy,
telecommunications, water and transport services.
Travel and Tourism policies
Tourism 2020 was developed to respond to the ongoing challenges and
emerging opportunities for the Australian tourism industry. Tourism 2020 is a
national strategy to grow the tourism industry through a partnership of
government working with industry to achieve the Tourism 2020 target of
doubling overnight expenditure of domestic and international visitors to
between $115 and $140 billion by 2020. There are four policy priorities under
Tourism 2020 to make the tourism industry grow in Australia. These are to:
encourage high quality tourism experiences, including indigenous tourism, limit
the tax, red tape and other regulatory burden industry faces, undertake
coordinated and effective marketing campaigns to drive demand, and lastly to
work with the industry to support the development of tourism infrastructure that
can drive demand.
