PROJECT 3: Annotated Bibliography (10 % of your total grade)
Due on Monday, 6th November
For this assignment, you will use your research question to find and assess at least eight
scholarly sources that may be helpful for your final paper. You may include empirical research
articles , or secondary scholarly sources such as a meta-analysis or a literature review. You could
use a book (or a chapter in a book), but make sure it’s up-to-date. Popular sources are not
acceptable for this assignment. Use APA citation style.
Project Format
Part 1: Preliminary Information (10 points)
In one paragraph, write your research question, and explain why you’ve decided to pursue this
topic, and this specific question. Be thorough in your explanation.
Part 2: Annotated Bibliography (90 points)
Each of your eight (or more) annotations should include three parts. Each annotation should be
between 150 and 200 words. Start by citing the source in APA style (10 points for accurate
citations).
1. Summary: What are the main arguments? What is the point of this article? What topics are
covered? If someone asked what this article is about, what would you say? If your source is
reporting empirical research, then include the purpose of the study, the participants involved, the
procedure, and the main findings in your summary. You may not quote from the article. Use
your own words. At the beginning of the annotation, indicate the type of source.
2. Assessment: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is the author(s)
credible? What are his/her credentials and institutional affiliations? Is the journal peer-reviewed?
Is the source current? How many times was the article cited? Who is the publisher? Is the
information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? Are the
references available? Check the sources cited by the author. Are they credible, scholarly sources?
3. Reflection: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into
your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How
can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?

This scholarly article is an analysis of a qualitative research study collecting and
analyzing interview data of twelve neuroscience ICU nurses. The purpose of the study
was to describe the nurses’ perceptions regarding their role in end-of-life care and
decision making for patients. After being interviewed, many nurses felt that they
provided guidance to patients’ families by asking them what their thoughts were and
steering them towards a reasonable decision. Nurses also described themselves as a
middle-man in between physicians and families where they communicated and translated
between them. The article also comments on how nurses in end of life care struggle not
only with families’ emotions but also their own. The article concludes that though a
nurse’s role in communication is difficult, it is indispensable in end of life decisions.
•
This article is reliable for many reasons. First, the lead researcher , Amy Calvin, PhD,
RN, who is an Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing at the University of Texas and an
author of 25 articles related to end of life care and pain management is a credible author.
Second, the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing is peer-reviewed and published by the
American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, which applies the newest neuroscience
research to the nursing profession. Third, this article was published in 2007 and,
therefore, is current and up-to-date (student research paper submitted in 2009).
•
This article will be helpful in understanding the actual experience of ICU nurses who care
for patients and interact with doctors in end of life care. It supports my working thesis
expressing the need for greater communication and collaboration between nurses and
doctors in end of life care and provides groundwork for how a nurse’s involvement with
patients and families qualifies them to assist in making decisions.
Assessment:
You will be assessed on the following:
1. Quality and reliability of the sources
2. Writing fluency of the annotations (including completeness and correct grammar)
3. Accuracy in APA documentation
