Instructions
“Citizens Who Care” by Anne-Marie Slaughter
“From the Frying Pan into the Fire” by Arlie Russell Hochschild
Wednesday, 11/8: Rough Draft due (2-5 pages); Bring 4 copies
Wednesday, 11/15: Final Draft due (5-6 pages) Bring one copy to class and
submit one copy to Turnitin via Sakai.
Slaughter is looking for new public policies that would create “a country that
values work and family equally and enables its citizens to live full and happy
lives” (232). But what happens when these citizens struggle to find a balance
within a “competing urgency system” (Hochschild 189)? How can we achieve the
kinds of policy changes Slaughter is calling for while living in a world where
“social logic” calls for citizens to apply “the principle of efficiency” to their
personal lives (Hochschild 184)? How would the “infrastructure of care,” as
described by Slaughter, help the workers at Amerco? Why is it so difficult for
America to institute “government or workplace policies” that support caring for
children, elderly parents, and sick relatives? What are the benefits to the “Care
Grid” (Slaughter 233)? What does it mean to be a “caring society” according
to Slaughter and to Hochschild? How and why should politicians work
together to help Americans become “citizens who care” (Slaughter 246).
How can we work together to achieve this goal?
For this fourth assignment:
• Answer the assignment question clearly and fully in the form of a revised and
coherent paper. Develop an overall structure for your essay with a clear
introduction, thorough conclusion, and solid body paragraphs.
• Make sure you have at least three paragraphs where you show connective
thinking using a quote from each essay. Make sure you quote each essay at least
three times. Remember, your goal is to make connections between you and the
authors.
• As you choose quotes to use within paragraphs, think about how well the
quotes speak to one another. Choose quotes that make sense together.
• Remember to thoroughly work with all your quotes. Don’t be afraid to
challenge/disagree with the authors.
• Provide adequate context, use proper citation, and provide analysis that
explains what the quotations are doing for you in your own paragraphs.
• Avoid just dropping quotes in to your paper and leaving them hanging. Analyze
the text.
• Every quote should be there as evidence to support your claim.
• Make sure you are making an overall point as you are engaging with both texts.
• Remember that this paper counts significantly towards your 100 grade so do
your very best work.
• Do not turn in any late work or short work, as this will automatically lower
your grade.
