Ineffective communication is one of the challenges affecting the nursing profession in
most healthcare facilities. Some of the medical errors that harm patients in hospitals arise from
ineffective communication between nurses and doctors and among the nurse practitioners. The
problem is interesting since it has contributed to some fatal issues in the hospitals where nurses
have not performed their duties as expected (McCarthy, 2017). As a result, there is the need to
address the problem as a way of having long-term solutions to most of the problems facing
patients due to the inability of the nurses to offer them quality services. The issue also has
affected the way in which nurses perform their duties. Lack of collaboration has made it hard for
the achievement of success in hospitals where patients have not received the best services by
their expectations.
Researchers have identified ineffective communication as a significant challenge in
hospitals. Most of the medical errors that have occurred in the facilities have resulted from poor
communication among the nurses and between the nurses as well as the doctors. The nurses are
expected to take care of the needs of the patients by ensuring that they have an easy time
recovering from the various diseases affecting their lives. However, when they fail to
communicate effectively, they end up missing on some critical points and notes related to the
diseases affecting the patients (Bello, 2017). As a result, hospitals have to take care of the issue
and ensure that nurses perform their duties with accountability and responsibility. On the other
hand, providing the nurses with a healthy working environment would imply that they will
perform their duties without failure and contribute to improved performance in the hospital.
Also, some of the hospital management executives have embraced the training programs that will
enable the nurses to perform their duties.
Innovation to solve the challenge
However, the challenge of ineffective communication has some measures through which
it can become solved and eliminated from affecting the performance of duties in the healthcare
facilities. The application of the electronic health records would become a better way of
communication where the nurses will have all information at hand related to each of the patients.
In this case, since the data will be stored in the electronic systems, the nurses will have access to
information related to patients which will enable them to take good care of the patients
regardless of their health issues (Martland et al. 2016). On the other hand, the application of the
EHR will also avoid making mistakes which may take place during the provision of care to the
patients. Therefore, the application of this innovation will lead to a successful elimination of the
challenges associated with ineffective communication amongst the nurses.
