Air Pollution
The issue of pollution has been of great concern in the society today. Air pollution alone
contributes to the death of an estimated 7 million people per annum who are reported to succumb
due to air pollution-related diseases. These figures are worrying from the fact that these people
succumb due to conditions like respiratory illnesses, stroke, cancers and heart diseases that
emanate from the pollution of air. If stringent policies were put in place, such a high number of
people could not fall victims of air pollution. Apart from affecting human beings, air pollution
has resulted in damage to the climate. Soot or what is referred to as fine particles of black carbon
emanating from biomass combustion, diesel as well as ground-level ozone are some of the
paramount examples. Reduction of air pollution would not only help save the environment but
also lives as it pushes towards helping on reducing the pace of near-term climatic change (Dora,
2012).
Community Organization
The Sierra Club has been one of the leading organizations who has risen to fight against
air pollution and render this planet a healthy place to live. The Sierra Club Foundation was
founded on 28th May 1892 in San Francisco in California, by the late Scottish- American
preservationist John Muir, who was the first president of the organization. The primary concern
of the club was the preservation of the environment with the club becoming the first large-scale
environmental preservation organization in the world. After its formation, late in the 1890s, the
club undertook various activities like publishing the map of the central Sierra Nevada as well as
Yosemite. The organization engaged in pushing for public forest policy, the establishment of the

Mt. Rainier National Park, and participated in the preservation of the North Grove of Calaveras
Big Trees.
At the beginning of the 1990s, the club membership had grown to more than a thousand
with the club contributing mainly to the construction of the Devils Postville National Monument,
enlargement of Sequoia National Park. In 1963 the organization launched the campaign to
safeguard the Grand Canyon and later won the Congress battle that led to the establishment of
the first Wilderness Act.
The club has since then registered great success with the most
significant achievement in 2012 when the organization influenced the US Department of the
interior to develop a plan which saw protection of 11 million acres of the Western Arctic Reserve
from gas and oil drilling (Dowdey, 2007). Lately, the club lobbies politicians to promote green
policies across the globe.
The club meets the needs of the community through first fighting for the protection of the
environment. The club also organizes for community services such as mountaineering, outings,
and hiking. The organization has helped push the community needs through policies that
encompass land management, opposition to dams especially those which are inappropriate that to
affect animal life as well as people like the O’Shaughnessy Dam. The barriers at the lower Snake
River, opposition to coal, immigration, and population as well as allying with organized labor
(Dowdey, 2007)
Conclusion
Air pollution has contributed to death and harm in the society. Stringent solutions have to
be put in place to help address the effects of air pollution. The Sierra Club has been fundamental
in helping come up with solutions related to air pollution. A campaign was launched by the

Southeast CARE Coalition with the aim of reducing toxic air emissions within the Hampton
Roads. The community-based air monitoring program aims at getting a picture of the quality of
air by monitoring the levels of particulate matter, volatile organic carbons, diesel emissions,
heavy metals, and toxins (Crawford, 2016). Students and community members who participate in
organization’s service learning can get experience air quality monitoring practices as well as gain
exposure to work with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality which works in
harmony with a branch of Sierra Club (Vizenor, Souza & Ertmer, 2016)
The club has also helped communities from air pollution through the use of smog air
alerts. The club’s digital tool transmits subscribers with text alerts issuing a notification when air
pollution gets too high levels within a fifty-mile radius. Service learning within the organization
will help the community in ensuring that they are notified of any toxic exposure within the air
that might be a threat to their health (Willis, 2014)
