Research Proposal Part I
Some scientists believe that there is a connection between mental illness and
crime, however, others have not fond a direct relationship between the mentally ill and
criminal activity.
The Relationship between Crime and Mental Illnesses
It is believed that those individuals with traits of a mental illness that have
committed crimes have been more likely to be convicted and incarcerated for those
crimes, this may be due to the lack of proper representation, or conflicting theories that
“Expert Witnesses” may testify about during the court proceedings.
In most cases the District Attorney is more involved with the conviction rather
than having the goals of retribution or crime prevention when interacting with individuals
with a mental illness. The criminal justice system’s focus is retribution with individuals
with mental illness, then the judicial system should consider less accountability due to
their mental health. If the judicial system is to prevent crime, treatment, incapacitation,
and deterrence should be considered as alternatives. Traditional prisons may not have the
means to adequately house or treat the mentally ill, which may in turn cause recidivism
rates among convicted and released individuals with a mental illness.
The Importance of the General Area under Study
Conducting a research in such an important topic must be well structured and well
planned. According to Unite for Sight (2011), “a large sample size is more representative
of the population, limiting the influence of outliers or extreme observations.
1. A sufficiently large sample size is also necessary to produce results among
variables that are significantly different.

2. For qualitative studies, where the goal is to “reduce the chances of discovery
failure,” a large sample size broadens the range of possible data and forms a better
picture for analysis” (para. 1). In this case, the incarcerated population will be
evaluated and studied.
Research Problem
According to the new article published by the American Psychological
Association,” a study of crimes committed by people with serious mental disorders, only
7.5 percent were directly related to symptoms of mental illness” ( para. 1). The previous
research done on this matter have disused many of the obvious link between crime and
mental illness. This theory is not often confirmed and blame on the media or the public
focus on topic that is not as they say common in real life. Therefore, advanced and
concrete information backed with evidence based data must be gathered.
Research Questions
Consequently, the research will aim at answering the following questions
Are the mentally ill persons violent?
Are the mental ill more violent than people without mental illness?
Are the mentally ill a risk/threat to the safety of the public?
Can treatment of mental illness cases help reduce crime levels in the community?
Rationale of Thesis
As stated, the thesis aims at establishing the relationship between mental illness
and crime by answering several questions. By answering the question as whether the
mental ill are violent, are they more violent than persons without mental illness, or
whether they are a risk to the society and the role of treatment in reduce crime related to

mental illness, we will be able to come up with an objective conclusion and
recommendations.
