Example:Generating Electricity With Wood Instead of Fossil Fuels
Section I
Summary: This article discusses the use of wood as a cleaner, more efficient energy source. A
continuing problem for the environment is the burning of fossil fuels for energy. This is a
problem because it contributes to pollutions and has been associated with global warming. The
process of torrefaction is used to remove the moisture from the woodchips and the torrified wood
has 80% of its original energy, which makes it ideal for electric power plants, which would
normally use coal. Overall, this article discusses the process and advantages of using wood over
burning of fossil fuels for energy.
The environmental issues involved are burning of fossil fuels, particularly coal. The burning of
fossil fuels contributes to acid rain, air pollution and global warming.
Section II
The impact of the environmental issues identified in Section I on the community and
society are global warming which causes super storms, impairs agricultural production, causes
air pollution, including acid precipitation which impacts human and environmental health.
The possible outcomes could be a decrease in the population of humans and nature and a limited
food supply.
We should be aware of this situation because although we might not see the effects of
global warming or air pollution right now, these are problems that need serious solutions because
in our life time we may begin to see more flooding, decreases in agriculture and increased
respiratory problems.
The solution for the future is the process of torrefaction. This does not solve every problem
because this could lead to deforestation, which is another environmental problem. However, it
seems as if this is a more efficient way than the burning of fossil fuels due to limited supplies of
fossil fuels are limited and they are not as clean as using wood.
My opinion changed after reading this article because I never thought or cared about what I
was doing and how it would affect the world I live in, but now I see how important it is to find
solutions to limit human the impact on the environment.
I would recommend that others read this article because it opens your eyes to all of the impacts
on the world we live in and how there are people out there trying to help.
