Fighting Obesity with Technology
Obesity is now considered a global issue, and it is spreading like wildfire across the
United States of America (Olson, 2017). Specifically, about one-third of children and teenagers
in America are overweight, and this makes childhood obesity the number one health problem for
a parent in the country. The project is aimed to discuss obesity issue both in America and
internationally as well as explain the role or significance of technology in fighting this global
problem.
It was interesting to witness the launch of several computer programs, interactive apps
as well as health trackers by Pulp-PR Company. These innovations or technologies which were
introduced by the company were meant to enhance the children’s physical, mental as well as
emotional growth. According to the company’s assistant account executive, the technologies
were developed to support in solving the growing issue of childhood obesity in America. One of
the notable technology toys is Leapband’s Wearables which is a health tracker which has 50
activities and challenges programmed on it (Olson, 2017).

Final Paper for Social Utility Project
In this paper, you will present your design idea in the form of a thesis paper. The thesis
of the paper is to answer this question:
•
Based on your assessment of your design’s affordances and constraints, why do
you think your design has a chance at addressing or solving the issue/problem?
This final paper is your attempt to bring together your work on your Social Utility
Project. This is a thesis paper where you will clearly detail why you think your design
using digital communication technologies would help to address/solve an issue/problem.
To do so, you should answer these questions:
•
What is the nature of the issue/problem you addressed?
o Why should it be addressed?
•
How have others used the digital communication technologies to address or
solve the issue/problem? (Present at least one example)
•
How does your design use the technologies to address or solve the
issue/problem?
o What digital communication technology(s) would your design use, and
how would it use them?
o Provide an illustration or mock-up to demonstrate how your design would
work
•
How effective would your design be in addressing/solving the issue/problem?
o What are the affordances and constraints of your design?
▪
What would your design be created to do? (affordances)
▪
What would your design not be created to do? (constraints)
▪
Do the affordances outweigh the constraints?
This paper will be submitted online at our Canvas site. While your project could be a
partner project, each person must write their own final paper.
This needs to be a 4-6 page paper including images to illustrate your design and a list
of references.
The paper should have at least five professional sources, which could come from your
course readings and additional research.
•
These sources should be properly cited in the text and referenced using APA or
MLA citation styles (such citations are where you indicate from what source the
information originated – any information you did not originate needs to have an
in-text citation).
This thesis paper should have an original argument. Any indication of plagiarism of the
argument or sources will result in the paper receiving 0 points.
Outline for Social Utility Project
This step allows me to provide you feedback on your design, and your assessment of
the design, before your final paper.
In this assignment, you will provide an outline of all parts of the final paper so that I
can see your arguments and how well structured they are.
Thus, for this outline, you need to explain:
1. nature of the problem/issue you are addressing and why you are doing so
2. examples of others using digital communication technology to address
the problem/issue, and what you learned from them
3. your design idea and how it would work to address the problem/issue
4. your assessment of the design’s affordances and constraints in
addressing the problem/issue
This outline should follow a traditional outline format. References are not needed for
this outline. I am more focused on how you organize your arguments and describe your
design.
Suggested Outline Format:
I. Problem/Issue
A. What is the nature of the problem/issue you are addressing/solving?
B. Why is this a problem/issue that needs to be addressed/solved?
II. Analysis of Examples (at least one)
A. Who used the digital communication technology(s) to address/solve the
problem/issue?
B. What digital communication technology(s) did they use?
C. How did they use the digital communication technology(s)?
D. How effective was the use of the digital communication technology(s)?
III. Design Idea
A. What is the purpose of your design idea?
1. Why does it addresses/solves the problem/issue?
B. What is the nature of the design idea?
1. What digital communication technology(s) are you using?
2. How are you using the digital communication technology(s)?
IV. Analysis of Design
A. How effective will your use of the digital communication technology(s)
be?
1. What are the affordances of this design idea?
2. What are the constraints of this design idea?
3. Do the affordances outweigh the constraints?
V. Conclusion
A. Restate nature of problem
B. Restate what others have done
C. Restate what your design will do
D. Restate why your design will be effective
