Running head: DSS 200 JOURNAL 7
Please briefly summarize chapters 9-13, the case study based chapters. Summaries of each
chapter can be brief, approximately one paragraph, as we have already discussed the chapters in
class. The idea behind the summary is to provide your own final reflection of each chapter we
have covered. Don’t forget to consider the outcomes of our content rubric.
“The following section contains five case studies (they are listed below) that relate to the social
institutions and sociological theories you have learned about in the previous eight chapters. The
case studies are short, which means you can do more research to complete the picture.
Ask yourself for each case study how family, education, religion, social control, and the
economy relate to the issue. And wonder what conflict theorists, symbolic interactionists, and
structural functionalists would say about each case.”

Chapter 4: Family
The family is defined as a group of people lives together in the same place. The Family
consists of such as father, mother, and children, or close friends. The family should have at least
one correlation to consider as family. Sociologist divided the family into two types the family of
orientation which is the one you born into, and the family of procreation which comes from
marriage or child adoption. Nowadays, there are new types of the family in the world such as
same-sex marriage, single-parent, and childfree. The Family is the first point and the start in
everyone’s life, and that what makes it essential (Unger, 2015).
Chapter 5: Education
Education is one of the sources of knowledge in the individual’s life, and it’s the
key to open the human’s mind. Hence the individual will be more aware and protected from stray
thoughts like terrorism. Moreover, the education leads the nations to be more opened to the life
and more developed. When the person goes to school, he/she does not only earn knowledge or
get a job but also benefit the society and increase the economy in the country. Lack of education
leads to more crimes in the world. The education in the world is facing problems like, bullying
which still huge issue and has not solved yet (Ainbinder & Santos, 2015).
Chapter 6: Religion
Religion defined as the service and worship of God or the supernatural. The
significant of the religion is giving a unique identity to a particular group of people or
community, answering ambiguous questions in the life such as; who create the world, and what
will happen we die, and creating a strong relationship between individuals by sharing the

practices. Sociologists divided religions into western religions and eastern religions. The western
religions are Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. They focus more on the self, and it is a set of
beliefs more than rituals. The eastern religions are Buddhism and Hinduism. They focus more on
the group, and it is ritual (Luttio, 2015).
Chapter 7: Deviance and social control
The deviance is defined as the state of departing the cultural or social norms that accepted
by the majority. Time, place, and power are the three factors that determine whether the act is
considered as deviant or not. Deviant acts are might considered as crimes like doing drugs or
considered as out of norms of the society like yelling while someone else talking. Social control
is divided into two types formal and informal social control; the formal control is following the
government rules, the informal control is what rules that are come from the parents or friends.
The obedience is the state of following the rules of the authority, and it’s necessary for the
society (Casey & Keipert, 2015).
Chapter 8: Economy
The economy is one of the factors that decide the class of society or country. By the time,
the world shifted to Industrial Revolution; hence that made a huge gap between the wealthy
people and the poor people, this gap has been considered a mystery to the sociologist. Karl Max
who came up with the idea (Conflict theory), shows that there are two group of people, the labor
who works and cannot make enough money, and the wealthy people who has the power. The UN
and some organization are still working to find a solution for this problem (Krift, 2015).
