Pariah: Breaking Free
Pariah ends with a splicing of two sequences: one in which Alike says goodbye to her father and
best friend, Laura, and one in which she recites an original poem. How does the blending of
these two scenes serve to underscore the film’s emphasis on Alike’s freedom from the obstacles
she’s been facing? Consider the shift between the recitation of the poem and other scenes (what
scenes are paired with which parts of the poem?); Alike’s outfit; the final image of her on the
bus.
You should use it.

Scene Analysis Guidelines
Throughout the semester, we’ve discussed film scenes and how they speak to the larger concepts
or thematic interests in a given film. For this assignment, I’m asking you to identify and describe
the visual elements–and, in some cases, auditory elements–of a scene, and to discuss the role of
those elements in the film’s narrative–what they suggest or emphasize about a given character,
concept, or theme.
Your goal is not to catalogue all the elements in a scene, but to locate the one’s you believe are
most important. This can include everything from close ups on particular characters, aspects of
characters and objects; point-of-view shots from certain character’s perspectives; use of color and
color contrast to accentuate certain characters, background settings, props; music or sounds; and
costume (what characters are wearing in terms of clothes, makeup, and otherwise).
Don’t worry about using film theory jargon. Just describe what you see to the best of your ability.
Preparation
The scenes are short. So be sure to watch yours multiple times, taking notes on anything that
stands out to you.
Writing the Scene Analysis
Aim for 1-2 pages single-spaced, Times New Roman Font. Treat the analysis as a formal writing
assignment. Be sure to include the following parts:
(1) An introduction to the scene. In a few sentences set the scene by summarizing it and
contextualizing it. For instance, if you were to write about the “No Man’s Land” scene in Wonder
Woman, it would behoove you to say to your reader: “At one point in Wonder Woman, there’s a
scene in which the titular hero finds herself in a trench on the frontline of the war, faced with a
decision decision to listen to Steve Rogers or take action. She decides to take action by….”
(2) Identification and description of the visual (and auditory) elements. This is the most
important part of the assignment. Be sure to say the specific elements that stand out to you, and
to describe in detail how those elements work in the scene. Avoid listing the elements. Instead,
describe them one at a time, and, if you can, say how they make be linked to each other (how
color and sound might be working together, how two different visual elements might be working
together).
(3) Elements and theme. For this section, discuss: How do the elements you’ve pointed out work
to emphasize aspects of character or story? Do they speak to larger concepts or motifs in the
film?
I will evaluate your review based on the associated rubric.
