Rhetorical Analysis of a Text
1,000-word minimum, APA Format
What is a Rhetorical Analysis? To write a rhetorical analysis, you look at a text paying
attention not necessarily to the content, but to how it was written—this requires “reading
like a writer.” For this paper, rhetorical analysis includes analyzing how a text delivers a
message; identifying the rhetorical situation that the author is responding to, including
the audience, purpose, and context; recognizing the writing choices the author makes;
and supporting all your observations with textual evidence.
write a rhetorical analysis paper which will discuss some of the context of the article.
Your paper will address the below details, and discuss how they impact the article, the
writing choices made in the article, or how the audience may respond to it.
• Identify the author’s purpose in writing the article
• Describe any identifiable political/social/academic context to which the article is
responding (e.g.: was this article written in response to another article? Was it
written in response to a certain event, trend, issue, or controversy?)
• Explain who is the author’s intended audience (tip: research the periodical) and
consider how this audience will respond to it. (e.g.: surprise, confusion,
controversy, disagreement, agreement)
In addition, your paper will answer the following questions about the author’s writing
choices:
• What is the main argument of the article?
• Is the author affiliated with any institutions, agencies, or corporations? How might
this impact their work or writing?
• How does the author use language to present their argument? Give an example
from the text. (e.g.: persuasive, technical, academic, conversational, casual)
• Why did the author structure the article the way they did? How did they organize
their data and argument?
• How does the author use evidence/data/outside sources to support their
argument? What type of evidence do they use?
Your paper will discuss why the author made these writing choices, and support claims
with examples and/or quotations from the text. For example:
Rodriguez (2017) uses persuasive language in this article. For example, in the
conclusion, she uses the words “strongly” and “powerfully” (p. 26), which emphasize the
importance of her research. This use of language is intended to persuade the reader
that her work is conclusive.
I recommend using straightforward language, instead of academic language, and building simple
sentences that use specific details and examples to get your meaning across.
Structure: This is a formal, academic essay. This is not an argument paper, so no
thesis statement is necessary, but an introduction and conclusion will likely be
helpful for your reader. Please assume your reader has not read the article.
Please include topic sentences. Beyond that, the structure of your paper is
flexible, but it should be logical and clear to your reader. Outside sources are not
necessary, but may be used if you’d like to do background research on your
author or the publication, for example. Please refer to and quote from the original
article multiple times, using appropriate APA/MLA citations and a

Structural engineering: Seeing the Big Picture by W.F. Chen
Structural engineering is a fascinating field of study. Today, the brilliance of this area of
study is manifested in the construction of beautiful and sophisticated buildings, bridges among
others. However, the evolution of the evolution of structural engineering has not been easy.
There are a lot of factors that have had to be put in place to arrive at these desirable facilities. In
the paper, ‘Structural engineering: seeing the big picture’ W.F Chen, examines the evolution of
structural engineering for the past 50 years. Most importantly, he discusses the manner in which
the practitioners in this field have embraced the idealization and simplification of the designs to
arrive at the desired structures. Besides, the author also examines the functions that the
computing power has had in this field for the last half a century.
As is indicated above, the level of development of structural engineering has been
incredible for the last fifty years. While no specific reason can be attributable to this
phenomenon, the author seeks to examine the developments that have occurred in this area of
study. Chen wants to explore this reality with specific attention on the input of computer
technologies in the developments in this field. Instructively, the author indicates that the growth
in structural engineering has always moved along the events in the use of various computer
technologies.
The paper is constructed around the various concepts that have been developed with
regards to structural engineering in the last fifty decades. Since the discovery of computers and
the growth of its application in multiple fields, the civil engineering sector has applied it to a

the introduction of generalized stress and strains and the various ways in which these issues
contributed to a wide range of aspects in the growth of structural engineering. The paper
responds to the needs to determine some of the primary determinants of progress in the field of
engineering. The trend of the application of computer technologies in construction contributed
immensely to the development of the article.
While the paper is suitable for the consumption of the general public, the manner in
which it is constructed indicates that it is intended to be used by the stakeholders in the
construction engineering fraternity. The students, researchers, universities, consultants, and
practitioners appear to be the primary target of the paper. The knowledge that is provided in the
article would be necessary for the promotion of the activities of these groups of people. After
receiving the contents of the paper, the audience is likely to receive it with mixed reactions.
While there are individuals who will agree with the author regarding the role of computing
power in the development of the civil engineering sector, there are other groups of people who
would attribute these changes to other factors in the societies.
As indicated in the preceding sectors, Chen sought to demonstrate the progress of civil
engineering in the last half a century. In examining this progress, the author took a 3-line
analysis to examine the forces that have been playing major roles in the development and
expansion of the civil engineering sector in the world. The first center of analysis is the spatial
idealization of the various elements that make up the structural composition of the sector. These
were presented in the forms of kinematical assumptions and their applicability to civil
engineering. The second approach and rationale that the author adopted in the development of
the paper was the examination of the generalized stress and strains and the various ways in which
they affected the development of the new ideas in construction practices (Chen, 2008). In the

desire to develop massive structures, the engineers had to look at the various options that are
available concerning the arrangement of materials in a manner that the stress and strain would
not affect the stability of the facilities. Finally, the author-centered his argument on how the
incorporation of computer technology has been helpful in making sure that the buildings attain
the required quality standards. The application of various computer applications has been
beneficial for the engineers to have a close examination of the details of the structures that they
are building and the incorporation of the adjustments in ways that would not adversely affect the
quality of the buildings.
Being an engineering paper, it was highly expected that the author would use technical
language to explain the various concepts. True to that, the author has used technical language
such as ‘stress’ and ‘strains’, the ‘equilibrium equation’s (p.27) among others to describe the
issues.
An examination of the profile of the author reveals that there is associated with the
Department of Civil Engineering, Hawaii University. Ordinarily, the affiliation between authors
of papers and various institutions have tremendous impacts on the direction and general thought
in the paper. In some cases, writers use articles selectively to buttress positions that they had
earlier taken regarding some issues in question. However, due to the manner in which the author
has presented the arguments in the paper, it is apparent that the author has tried to be as objective
as possible and is not influenced by his institution of affiliation.
Chen has used various forms of evidence in justification of his assertions. For instance,
the author refers to pieces of work such as books written by Timoshenko to justify his positions

regarding the development of some concepts in the matter at hand. Besides, the author relies on
previous pieces of work that were done by himself and Lui (Chen, 2008) to justify his grounds.
In ‘Structural engineering: Seeing the big picture’ Chen explores some of the factors that
have contributed to the tremendous growth in the structural engineering field. One of the issues
that the author claims to have helped to this reality was the development of computers and the
increase in the applications was critical in the development of structural engineering.
