Leaders—Born or Made?
Good leaders are made not born they are developed through time, experience, education
and even life events. Great leaders can arise from pretty much any place at any time. There are
numerous leadership lessons that can be extracted from the lives of great business leaders like
John D. Rockefeller, Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan, Sam Walton, Jack Welch, A. G. Lafley, Steve
Jobs, and Bill Gates. Although different in personality and style, these leaders showed talent at a
very young age, persevered in achieving their goals, surrounded themselves with the best people
they could, worked hard and with great discipline, had great confidence in themselves, and were
creative and innovative in managing their businesses (Silva, 2014, p. 1). People are not born
leaders, but some were born to become leaders, others might not have the skills needed to lead a
group of people or the leader of a small business, the characteristics that make them great leaders
are similar.
Leaders are Made Not Born
While some may be born with an innate knack for great leadership skills like confidence,
communication, and creativity, I’d like to argue that great leaders are made not born. Even if you
are born with certain traits and talents, only through carefully developing those skills and talents
can you learn to master the art of leadership. Being a great leader takes practice. To develop great
people skills, potential leaders need to learn how to become better listeners, how to accept
critical feedback in a constructive way, and how to best display empathy and patience with other
team members and colleagues. Confidence is also a huge part of leadership, and is a trait you can
practice and hone over time. Confidence and self-esteem come from interactions where we (in
our own eyes) behave positively.

We can exercise this through becoming more decisive in our work and personal lives,
learning more about our industry so we become knowledge experts, and building our own
success rather than waiting for others to hand it to us. Additionally, responsibility and integrity
are very important leadership skills to have, although no one is born knowing how to be
responsible. Integrity itself is also a choice. Becoming more responsible and acting with integrity
(I believe the two go hand in hand) is achieved through accepting blame when something goes
wrong, taking charge on solving difficult problems, and learning how to stay calm and
troubleshoot when things do not go as planned.
If leadership is primarily about nature, then researchers could plot out the right mix of
communication skills, intellect, strategic thinking, and exact spot on the chart between
introversion and extroversion to identify the next “great man” or “great woman.” But we don’t do
that because we all have seen effective leaders that are very different from each other. Effective
leaders have different personalities and skills. While all great leaders influence people with
effectiveness, how they influence people varies greatly.
Some great leaders are extroverts, while others are introverts. Some great leaders are
administrative and obsessed with maximizing value through managing details, while others are
more strategic and maximize value by leveraging people toward great opportunities. The
characteristics given at birth impact the type of leader someone is, whether relational, strategic,
or administrative. But it is the development of a leader that impacts his or her effectiveness.
While nature impacts how one leads, nurture impacts the effectiveness of one’s leadership.
Leadership Traits and Behavioral Theories
Behavioral Theories believe that people can become leaders through the process of
teaching, learning and observation. Leadership is a set of skills that can be learned by training,

perception, practice and experience over time. Leadership learning is lifetime activity. Good
leaders seek out development opportunities that will help them learn new skills. Leadership has
been proven to be critical to organizations through different leadership styles, characteristics, and
examples of great leaders. Through time it has been proven that leadership and being a good
leader is very important for our world and all different backgrounds, educational levels and traits
or styles are examples of it. There are many leadership lessons that can be extracted from the
lives of great business leaders, the success of a country is determined by the leaders it elects and
the leadership characteristics and qualities they possess, and the qualities of a good leader such as
commitment, responsibility and honesty.
Roles of Made Leaders
Successful Leaders
Most leaders receive too much credit for the good things that take place during their
tenure and too much blame for the bad. A leader’s qualities surely impact the effectiveness of his
or her tenure, but so does the context of leadership and the people within the context. Leaders
lead within a specific context, and the context impacts the perceived effectiveness of their
leadership. And a great leader is not a great leader alone. Leaders who are recognized for “great
leadership” are always surrounded by teams of competent and committed people. I have seen the
impact of leadership development. I have seen how leaders are developed when they put
themselves in overwhelming situations, humbly seek feedback, read and learn, and practice and
seek instruction. I have also seen very “talented people” who are lazy and lack passion and
conviction. Over time, those who develop themselves are the ones people look to as their leaders.

Leadership Development
Selecting the terms “adaptive and perceptive qualities” suggest some degree of learning is
required. The idea that leaders must be able to perceive nuances and adapt their thinking and
behavior to a wide range of circumstances, suggests that learning through prior experience is a
prerequisite of the leadership status. How can you know what to do if you’ve never done it
before? How can you possibly be any good at it? How do we learn how to navigate the world
from birth? We certainly don’t come out knowing any of it. The path to leadership is certainly no
different. Through trial and error, you learn the best practices or create new ones that work.
People rarely develop leadership acumen without first experiencing a “crucible “or an
intense, transformative experience that impacts their thinking, behavior, and ultimately
leadership success. While the nature of these experiences varies in scope, the fact is that they
must occur. These experiences shape your perspective and how you navigate the world around
you. They ensure that a certain degree of learning takes place—sometimes even a complete
overhaul—such as a paradigm shift. The bottom line: it’s impossible for anyone to be born with
these experiences. They can only occur as you interact with the world around you.
Known Leaders
Leadership and all that it stands for has commonly focused on leaders such as Abraham
Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Mandela as exemplary leaders to
follow. There is still much to learn from the leaders mentioned; however, when you want to
develop your skills in the business field there are great business leaders that have many lessons to
you can learn from. Leaders such as, John Davison Rockefeller, Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan, Sam
Walton, Jack Welch, A.G. Lafley, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates are the business leaders that were
selected to extract success leading lessons from. They are some of the most recognized business

leaders known to the world. The lessons collected from these eight business leaders were made
to make a connection used as a leader’s transition. No doubt that these individuals mastered what
it takes to be a great leader and dominant in business.
Elements of A Leader
Leadership is a power that can be in all of us. There are many elements that comes with
being a leader and their qualities that include commitment, responsibility and honesty, and
suggestion that all leaders should be organized and comprehensive. Effective leaders have many
different talents and styles, but one thing they have in common is a positive attitude that by being
a great leader you can be successful in all aspects of life. Beverly Card quoted Stephen Covey
when he said, “Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that
they come to see it in themselves.” (Card, 2014).
Conclusion
Through time it has been proven that leadership and being a good leader is very important
for our world and all different backgrounds, educational levels and traits or styles are examples
of it. Leadership is one of the biggest and most important aspects of success and the future of all
organizations and businesses. All the pieces that makes you that kind of leader is the vital things
we need to use and implement in our everyday lives. Leadership in a whole has been studied
throughout time due to the difference it has made. There are times, it may seem complex, but by
concentrating on some essential characteristics and styles a leader brings to a team can lead to
success.
