Management Development Plan
As the fall semester is approaching to the end, I realize the day I step out from school
is becoming closer and closer, and I actually started to feel anxiety and worried about my
future. What should I do after I graduate from school? What is my goal? And what kind of
work I want to do? As my age is growing, my goals and dreams are keep changing with it
and I cannot figure out a certain answer for those questions. However, after I finished the
Business 160 class, I began to picture my future map. I started to figure out what kind of
person I am, what kind of company I want to work for and where should I head to in the
future. Moreover, I believe after I finish this paper, I will have a clearer mind of my future
planning.
Information about me
The first lesson that I have learned from this class was to get to know myself first,
because it is important to analyze and be familiar with my personality to gain a satisfy
future for me. All the personality evaluations I took are interesting, and they surprised me
somehow. I rate myself as Extraversion and ESFP personality, and that means I am an
outgoing and easygoing person who depend on feeling more and enjoy the interaction with
the world. I have to say this is a precise evaluation, because I did judge thing by my feeling
and try to be friendly to everyone, which also can be Type B personality. Nevertheless,
Type B bring me lay back and relax personality and also lead me to medium or lower selfmonitoring. In another 5 minutes personality test, the most accurate tool I took in this
semester, I am an “Otter” which describe me as an enthusiastic, Motivational and
Emotional personal. Also, it is true that I desire prestige but with friendly relationship
working environment. For example, when I was president of Chinese Student Association
last semester, I enjoyed the power and prestige I got as a president and I made a lot of true
friends with the members during that years. All these results reflected that I need some job
that can gain prestige for me, but build up friendly relationship with subordinate and
motivate them. On the Cognitive ability side, I am good at verbal ability and ability to see
relationship, but weak at numerical ability and deductive ability which I think need to be
improved. With the consideration of my extraversion and Type B personality, I think I
prefer to work under a free condition where allow me to express my idea verbally anytime
but with some rules to push and restrict me in my future career, like marketing job but not
accounting.
Specific to the job type, there are many factors I will consider when I pick my job after
I finished more evaluations. Although I am more extrinsic work motived, I will need to be
interested in and love my job first, and motivated by reward like money or promotion to
stimulate me work harder after all. To be honest, I do not consider a company’s
organizational social responsibility and ethical problems as factors when I pick job.
However, these factors are importance to me now because I learned how a worse CSR and
ethical can affect my work in this class. After the OB presentation, I found out I am more
looking forward to work for the company like Google or Yelp, but not Uber. The company
like Google tried to reward back to society after their success, and they care about their
employee and the ethical issues inside of the company. It is significance for me to work
under a safe and caring community, and a responsible company always pay more attentions
to employee’s wellbeing. As my job design, I think I highly require autonomy on my job
and task identity. When I got my first internship at China Telecom as a phone salesperson,
I got high level of autonomy to make many decisions which improved my working
efficiency. Furthermore, from the beginning I called my customer to the end I signed
contract with them, I have more control on my current work and the task identity help me
to clarify my work goal which is crucial too. I prefer medium feedback from my supervisor,
because too much feedbacks will lower my confidence on work and insufficient cannot
help me to improve my work.
As I develop my career, it is important for me to have freedom to changes job, and I
prefer to take high risk in my job career because I always believe high risk with high reward.
I would seek for a variety changes in my career, and I won’t just to develop only one
profession and stay in the same company. Because I want to learn different skills and
contribute them in different industries, and I will have a goal for my future work
development. During my career, I think the biggest stress I will have will be making enough
money. I have to say I am a greedy person, and I have a lot of goals want to achieve. For
example, I want to provide my children the best education, I want to travel to at least 5
places in a year and I want to take a lot of interest classes for my hobby. I am too greedy
to own different dreams, which require me to make a lot money and that will be a huge
pressure for me. However, I should learn how to control and mange my appetencies and
learn how to facilitate my money in an appropriate way.
I love working in a team because I enjoy listening different people’s idea, and make a
better work. I will contribute my time and ability to make sure I add value to my team, and
know how to listen but also communicate with colleagues efficiently during corporation.
After many times team working in the past two years, I think the best team I fit is the
working with responsible team members in different personalities, like some extraversion
and some introversion personality. If I am the leader of the team working, I will be “Orange”
leadership style, which represent more innovative, energetic and enthusiastic style. It is
true I want to and trying to be this kind of leader, and want to affect my subordinates by
my inspiration. I hope I can be led by the same way either, because I believe an energetic
and thoughtful leader can always motivate my passion on working. Moreover, I want as
much as power somehow, because power can allow me to see more and have bigger
potential in future development. I will use these powers to develop my skills, build up my
own social networking. When I was the president of CSA, there are a lot of conflicts
between member, I usually handle the conflicts by communicate with them just in time and
I want them to negotiate face to face. I define ethics as be moral and never try to do bad
things or break the law, and I will integrate it in my career by follow the rules and law with
a moral heart. On the communication side, I am more a verbal communicator and try to
communicate with my boss in a peaceful but efficiency way. I want a more flexible working
environment, because complex company structure and rules will make me feel stressful,
and I won’t motivate by high pressure. I usually make decision by my own feeling and
some rational judging, and sometimes will be too emotional to make which I need to learn
how to be more rational.
Information about Aligned Industries and Organizations
After getting know myself, I consider my career goal is working in small size marketing
or international business company. I enjoy working in small size company is because I
want to gain prestige, and somehow be a leader in the specific field which really motivate
me. According my personality, I am more suitable to work in global company with variety
culture and different innovative mind. My second language advantage can do me a big
favor on global business, and global small company usually provide a more flexible
working environment. As I am an outgoing and persuasive girl, marketing and international
business will be a good place for me because I love to negotiate and network with different
kinds of people. My dream is to have my own business, which allow me to have more
freedom and power on working. I enjoyed leading other, but not ruled by my boss.
The
company like China skinny, a Chinese-American business consultant company, really
interested me. They only have 30 employees, and I get the chance to be a leader of a project.
Most of my interested companies are small but beneficial, and they might have higher risk
to work with. For example, there are some small Chinese marketing companies I know in
Silicon Valley can earn million dollars by one big project, but maybe earn nothing in 3
months. The big companies like yelp or Facebook, I would like to try and earn some
working experiences there, but not staying long.
Road Map
The best way to know myself better and to see if my goal fit me is to experience first,
because after experiencing I will have better mind to depict my future road map. To test
my thinking, I should begin to get in touch some knowledge and skills that I will need in
the future work, and familiar with what exactly I will do for my dream job. And then is to
get to know the people who work in this field, which can help me to build up my own
relationship networking too by asking my friends, classmate and family. Talk with them
more, and I will gain a lot of useful information and learn practical experiences. After
getting closer to the field I want to work with, I can try to find some internship and test if
I really like and suitable for this job in the future. To get start my own network, I should
take advantage of the networking I gain from my CSA president period, and talk to them
often and maybe help them if they need. I think my friend David, the former president of
CSA who also working in marketing field, can be my mentor and give me guidance.
During I was working on this paper, I thought a lot for my future planning and analyze
deeper about myself. I think I still need to keep seeking the best road for me for the future,
I believe I will create the better future for me by using what I learned from the class.
