Project Report
The project report selected was Hyun-Ju Kang (2016) “Stress reduction program in a
military clinic”. The primary focus of this project was to implement a weekly yoga-based stress
reduction program for health care employees of a military outpatient primary care clinic with the
intention of reducing stress, which would promote decrease anxiety levels and occupational
fatigue.
Instrument
The measures and instruments used were (1) A short demographic survey for collection of
data for the sample and (2) Self-reported stress measured with the Perceived Stress Scale
(PSS) measuring a pre and posttest design which would evaluate the effect of an evidence of
staff stress in a reduction program. The PSS consisted of a 10- item pre-yoga questionnaire in
evaluating the responders’ perception about their level of stress while taking into account their
ability to cope with stress over the previous month, and a perceived stress scale post yoga, after
clinic staff participated in four weeks yoga therapy with a 10-item questionnaire. The scale
employs a 10 point Likert scale items with responses ranging from 0 (never) to 4 (always). The
items are composed of direct queries about current levels of experienced stress, feelings and
thoughts over the past month. These items are general in nature therefore they are relatively
free of content specific to any sub-population or group (Kang, 2016).
Validity and Reliability
According to (Kang, 2016) the previous reported reliability coefficients ranged from .52-.76
and the pre-and post-yoga PSS Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for his sample were.82 and .84,
respectively. This is an article of a study done in (2017) which was done to prove the reliability,
validity, and predictive validity of the subscales of the perceived stress scale (PSS) in older
adults. The PSS is comprised of two subscales but is used singly as a measure summary. The
reliability, validity and predictive validity of the subscales of this instrument were tested in a
study of older adults (Jiang, et al., 2017). The objective of the study was to evaluate the internal
consistency, test-retest reliability, and the con-current and predictive validity for the
development of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) of the positively- worded (PSS-PW)
and negatively- worded (PSS-NW) subscale scores in older adults. The reliability of the PSSPW and the PSS-NW was assessed using the Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency and
intra- class correlation for one-year test-retest reliability. Concurrent validity was evaluated by
examining the relationship between the PSS subscales and depression, anxiety, neuroticism,
and for positive and negative affect. Predictive validity was assessed using multivariate Cox
regression analyses to examine the relationship between baseline PSS-PW and PSS-NW
score, and subsequent onset of aMCI.
Results: Both PSS-PW and PSS-NW showed adequate internal consistency and retest
reliabilities. Both the PSS-PW and PSS-NW were associated with depression, neuroticism, and
negative affect. The PSS-NW was uniquely associated with anxiety while the PSS-PW was
uniquely associated with positive affect. Only the PSS-PW was associated with a statistically
significant increased risk of incident aMCI (HR = 1.27; 95% CI: 1.06-1.51 for every 5-point
increase in PSS-PW) (Jiang, et al., 2017).

This is another study that used the PSS, entitled, “further exploration of the young cares
perceived stress scale: identifying a benefit-finding dimension’ by Cassidy & Gilkes, (2013). The
objective of this study was to explore the young cares perceived stress scale (YCPSS), in
clarifying its dimension. This was a survey design using a 52 item questionnaire based on the
YCPSS, distributed to a sample of 329 young careers along with support, coping and
psychological distress measures that were attending in organized support groups. The results of
the study produced initial evidence for reliability and validity of an 8-item benefit finding
measure, as well as a clearer set of dimensions for the original YCPSS which could prove
useful in further exploration in benefit finding and resilience in young careers (Cassidy & Gilkes,
2013).
