LANGARA COLLEGE
DEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY
ASSIGNMENT IV: Active Investigation Report
Purpose:
The focus of the paper is upon Sociology of Sport and related Issues. The primary intent of this
project is for students to investigate and critically examine a social issue associated with physical
activity generally or sport specifically.
Assignment Focus:
Dr. Robert Pitter, School of Recreation Management and Kinesiology, Acadia University, stated that
collaborative learning, learning from being part of a small group, can “increase factual retention and
increase connections to other students” (Sernau 1995: 366). Pitter also believes that collaborative
learning [allows] students to learn both content and skills from their peers which is sometimes more
effective than learning these concepts from the instructor.
The Active Investigation is a collaborative activity, providing an opportunity for students to practice
working effectively in small groups. The final result of the groups’ efforts will be the submission of a
written group Term Report. Assignment IV will be completed in groups of three (student choice).
It is your responsibility to select a topic relevant to the course content and its focus upon
Sociology of Sport and related Issues; as well as to select one that has professional significance
and linkages. Examples of potential topics include:
• organized youth sports (informal youth games and/or organized sports);
• deviance in sport (violence, hazing, eating disorders, gambling, drug use);
• participation in sport and physical activity by people with diverse abilities (physical, cognitive,
behavioral, sensory);
• sport and issues related to gender, race and ethnicity, social class, economy, politics, media,
religion, and/or aging; and
• Varsity sports and / or intramurals in high school or university.
Specific Assignment Directions:
1. Form a group of three. When forming groups, consider common interests in topics, availability,
commitment and reliability.
2. Investigate potential sport-related social issues and select a single topic that interests all group
members. Formulate a research question based on your hypothesis.
3. Following selection of the topic and before proceeding with the investigation, each group must
meet with the instructor to obtain approval of the topic and research question.

4. Develop an Action Plan (Time Line) and submit via D2L Assessments in the Assignment IV
Dropbox. Use the outline provided to determine what tasks need to be performed, by whom and
when. The following are possible questions for consideration:
• What journal articles will be selected and who will review which journals / articles?
• Will 6 interviews or 5 interviews and 1 survey be developed and implemented?
• How will the interview questions (survey and observation, if included) be developed,
implemented and by whom?
• What subjects will be interviewed (who, by whom, when, completion date, including word
processing of questions and responses)?
• Will an observation be conducted, where (site), when and by whom?
• Will any special tools be required or useful for collecting data (e.g. tape recorder, camera,
camcorder, software)? If so, who will acquire them? Check with your instructor regarding the
ethical use of special tools in your investigation.
• What means of transportation will you use to meet with the interviewees or observation sites?
• Other considerations and / or pertinent tasks?
5. Select and examine six current peer-reviewed articles from relevant journals. Copy the
abstract from each peer reviewed article utilized. For each abstract include the citation and who
reviewed the article. Place all abstracts in the appendices.
• Additional relevant sources, such as books, newspaper and magazine articles, and DVDs,
may also be used in your investigation and cited, using APA style, in the references.
6. Conduct interviews (survey and / or observation) to further support, negate and / or negate the
research question.
• Will you conduct 6 interviews (2 per person) OR 5 interviews and 1 survey (50 subjects
minimum)?
• What is the intent of your interviews and possible survey and / or observation?
• What questions will be asked and by whom? Ensure format is consistent and questions are
appropriate for and relevant to the investigation.
• Discuss and identify why, who, where, when
• Who will contact and schedule the interview and, if included, survey and observation.
• Include questions and responses in appendices, plus name of interviewee, position, contact
information, who conducted each interview, date of interview as well as how. Note:
research articles prior to formulating questions for interviewees.
7. Collect, analyze and examine all data and anecdotes, including information obtained from all
relevant literature reviews.
8. Discuss the findings and develop conclusions.
9. Write personal (individual component) reflections statement.
10. Prepare and write the final report. If at any time you require assistance in writing your report,
please access the Langara Writing Center. Ensure all group members review the document.

journals. The final paper must show evidence of your literary review through use of
quotations from these sources.

September 2017
2
• Within each group, designate a liaison and recorder and indicate who is responsible for
each position in your first minutes.
o The group liaison is responsible for keeping the instructor apprised of the group’s progress
including any special needs and/or problems on a regular basis.
o The group recorder is responsible for recording and submitting the minutes for all group
meetings (information about minute formats can be found below). A group may designate
a single recorder or rotate this position.
o In addition, the group must determine who will perform specific roles such as who review
what literature, conduct which interviews and observe what situations. Note: each group
member must complete a minimum of two interviews.
2. Duties and Responsibilities:
• Each group should develop a regular meeting schedule (weekly or biweekly / twice) and
ensure each member has this schedule and is available for all meetings. The group is
expected to select a time when all members can agree to attend. For example, Thursdays
between 1830 – 2020 hrs may be available for group members. Unscheduled meetings and
impromptu meetings that do not include all group members are prohibited.
o With the exception of the first two – three meetings, students may elect to meet
electronically via D2L or other secure chat mediums. The same protocol regarding
scheduling, minutes, applies to electronic meetings.
o Face-to-face meetings must be held on college premises. No location where alcohol is
served will be approved. Meeting rooms may also be booked.
• On a weekly basis, meeting minutes must be submitted to the instructor and group
members, via D2L Assessments in the Assignment IV Dropbox on Fridays by 6:00 pm.
o Minutes must be word-processed and include the following information:
names of attendees and absentees,
time and location,
major topics discussed,
tasks allotted, to whom and completion date,
any issues arising
o Minutes from the second meeting must also include the group’s research question and
action plan (see task assignments).
• Group liaisons should connect regularly with the instructor, particularly if issues are arising
relative to the project and/or group dynamics.
o Before proceeding with the actual investigation, confirm your topic and research
question with the instructor. The initial meeting should include all group members.
o Weekly group liaison meetings are suggested until each group has completed all the
requirements of the active investigation. These meetings will enable the instructor to know
how each group is progressing, learn of problems encountered or identify potential
problems, provide opportunities for teaching relationship i
• No racial, sexual, or other forms of harassment will be tolerated.
3. Participation Requirements:
• Productive groups are characterized by input and effort from all members. Therefore, it is
extremely important that every member attend each meeting and actively participate.
• Members will be graded on participation including attending meetings at the designated time.
Missing more than one meeting will result in a lower grade which will be reflected in the final
grade for the project. As a group member you are expected to …
o provide input both voluntarily and when solicited, promptly;
o respond directly to other group members’ input;
o participate in discussions to make consensual decisions;
o encourage and model effective communication and relationship skills; and

4. Decisions:
• In a small group situation where decisions impact all group members, decision- making via
consensus is the most effective way of getting a strong commitment from everyone.
Decisions should be made by consensus rather than by majority voting.
o Consensus decision making solicits input from all members until all agree on a decision
and results in everyone helping to carry out the decision because they were part of making
it.

1. Title Page: Follow APA style sheet, including modifications identified in class.
2. Content of Paper: Introduction to topic (identifying research question), body of paper
