The role-playing section was quite the fascinating part of our Family practice class. As
Kroehnert (2007) mentioned, a vivid way of learning how to handle different situations requires
us to be creative and use roleplaying. We use role playing to stand in someone else’s shoes and
see the situation in a different perspective, however, in some situations this doesn’t give us
enough understanding. Horton was undeniably correct, “You can never walk fully into people’s
shoes” (1998, p. 197). As social workers, we must be humble enough to accept that we cannot
completely understand our clients. Sometimes when we listen to our clients’ stories, we may
know what is going on in their life but not able to really understand what kind of issues or even
pain they have been through. Role play is a good way to wear someone else shoes and look at the
problem different so that we may understand something in a different light, and this can also help
us to avoid unnecessary arguments. Allowing ourselves to be more creative and role play helps
us to understand someone else’s pain and allows us to practice counseling skills as a professional
social worker.
Before we create a scenario in which our team would have to choose different characters
in an open role-playing activity we must first make up a case, our team Care Bearers’ family
therapy model was Solution Focused, and we have built up four stories in the different setting
based on our four field placements. Each of the team members would not know their own case
until playing the role during the role-playing session as a social worker in charge of the family
therapy group. We were thinking to make four complex scenarios in which a dysfunctional
family would be present with multiple issues. The reason the role-playing exercise is difficult to
break down is that because of the scenario we had laid out, the parents within the family along

with the children have difficulties communicating and tend to argue over simple matters, with
this type of background it is likely that a social worker must step in.
For the first role-playing exercise the parents represented have careers in which the income
of the family is low, and are unable to have a family care doctor and don’t have enough money to
buy proper healthy food for their eight years old daughter who is underweight and suffering
other health issues. I played the daughter role in this family. When I got my role, I was thinking
what an eight years old kid would know, and how she will be able to speak on her behalf when
confronted by a social worker. It was difficult at first to know which kind of tone she would have
and how would she resent herself, the most challenging aspect of this role was to act out which
type of health issues should be present for a child who is having issues with malnutrition.
The following setting takes place within a school’s Social Work office. The 14-year-old
student who was experiencing body dysmorphic disorder and not eating regular was coming with
her mother who typically works third shift and often times sleeps during the day when she gets
back from work, and the father who works 12-hour shifts who is also usually tired once he’s
home. This is quite rare for the student to see her parents together and attending a school meeting
with her, so already the student may possibly feel uncomfortable, knowing something must be
wrong.
One the stage was set it was my turn to act out my role. I am a social worker working at
an Adult Day Care Center to meet a family: An old lady in her 40s. Her health is worsening, and
the staff called in her two daughters to decide which course would be best for their mother.
During the interview, I have made them focus on the decision which would be most suitable for
their mother’s comfort and to help their Mather get social public services and not just fight on
who should be more responsible in taking turns nursing their mother. And also, I gave them a

possible solution for the type of problem they were having, I suggestions that, if any of them
help their mom, they can get paid for it, depending on the type of relationship the daughters may
have for their mother, getting reimbursed for the taking care of their mother may be a possible
benefit or incentive for them because they can apply to be her caregiver.
During the role-playing process, I could see these role plays all have different issues and
the people involved have internal problems within their families. Family therapists who were
involved try to have the development of socializing techniques with family members for their
problems and to look for possible solutions. After we close the role-playing exercise, the
members still feel they may be in their role-playing mode. They were still able to continue in
sharing how they felt and what kind of difficulty they may face. From the feedback, I think all
our team members did well in the different parts they were responsible for. They were able to
trade with our clients as the experts and were able to make their own decisions in their case. And
also, we focus on helping the family move from problem to solution in a timely manner giving
each individual to say what was on their mind and make the solutions by talking to their families
and build on their strengths and capabilities to solve their own problems (Rasheed, Rasheed, &
Marley, 2011).
Before I went to class, to be honest, I was worried I would not be able to participate
during the role-playing exercises because this was something I didn’t know how to conduct
myself in acting as someone else. I was so afraid that my group members would not be able to
understand the type of person I was trying to represent and that I would be left out of the
discussions. I tried twice as hard to be an effective group member. I always did my best to play
the supportive role as other members led the group. To my pleasant surprise, everyone welcomed
me. They helped me participate during role playing, and allowed me to act in the manner I felt

more fitting for my character. They were helpful and encouraging, I could feel the respect and
support from each group member.
