5 Methodology
After researching ways to build the HAWT, all what was found in the web is building a HAWT using
cardboards or water bottles. However, these methods weren’t professional so they were ignored. Since
team members attended the same high school, so a decision was made to design the HAWT parts in 3D
and print them using a 3D printer since this method used before in high school. 3D printing was highly
efficient and professional so it became the official method on building the HAWT.
There was a tough part on the process of 3D printing which is designing the parts using 3D drawing
program. However, YouTube tutorials and the background from high school made it easier to design and
the parts were printed perfectly as shown in figure 6. The first design couldn’t pull the weights properly
so it was altered. The second design could pull the weights efficiently and faster than the first one so it
became the final design.
7 Discussion
7.1 Initial Design:
After testing a lot of ideas regarding the structure of the blades and the tower supporting
it, 3D Design and printing proved to be the most beneficial and efficient out of them. Solid
Works program was used to design five pieces, which are the blades, hub of the blades,
tower, the base holding the blades, and the base holding the tower. After the first testing, a
major problem was discovered in the initial design which is in figure 7 regarding the process
of pulling the weights, which is the main idea of the project. The first solution was to attach
them on the blades which made the pulling process hard and complicated, even with light
weights. The second solution was to attach a pen with a string in the center of the blades
which was the most beneficial but not permanent. Therefore, the design needed to be altered.

7.2 Final Design:
The second design that is shown in figure 8, which was mainly focused on solving the
pulling problem, had some major changes in the base that holds the blades. The idea was to
design a thin pole that is attached to the blades and to the sides of the base through a hole that
is wide enough to make the pole turn with the blades and small enough to make the two hubs
fixed. In addition, the pole needed to have a plus shape to make the string work as a pulling
method. The solution proved to be successful and fixed the flaws that the first one had.
8 Conclusion:
Two designs were made for the project, the second one was the most efficient and successful.
3D printing was the method used in building the HAWT and the test results were positive. Using
the idea that the wind turbine uses the energy of the wind to generate electricity, the second
design used that same energy to create force that can left the weight hanging from the pole.
9 Future Works
One of the things that could be done in future to make this project more efficient, is to make
the blades wider, this will increase the speed of the rotation of the blade which will result in
lifting more weight faster. Another thing that could be done is to make the blades stronger.
Therefore, it will make them bear more weights.
